I have been making sausage for a few years and it definitely one of my guilt vices.  I started out using a KitchenAid attachment grinder and stuffer.  That lasted about two batches.  I got a great deal on a Cabela's 7lb. horizontal stuffer that works fantastic but I have continued to use the KitchenAid grinder.  It is okay but it takes forever and house CEO will kill me if I ruin her mixer.

I have finally saved up the money for a Cabela's commercial grinder.  Based on the reviews they look like they are one of the best out there for the price.  I am trying to decide between the 1/2 hp and the 3/4 hp.  I usually do 20 lbs to 30 lbs a month.  I know the general thought is always go as big as you can.

The grinders are on sale for $330 and $400.  Is it worth it spend the extra $70 or do I use that for others toys that I need.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Personally. I would save the money. I bought a small cheap grinder to try because  I   don't use it a lot. However, it will still grind 10 lbs fairly quickly. If the quality of both are good, I would be eyeing more toys!

I have the 1/2 hp commercial grinder...

It works great!!

I cant keep up with it..last time I used it I ground 10 lbs in 3 minutes..

The 1/2 Hp should be more than enough for that volume. I would rather have multiple toys...JJ

Thank you for the responses.  I think we have a winner

More toys it is!   I am guessing that it is going to be a big improvement over what I am currently doing.  I will have some pics coming up as soon as I can get it and some pork butt.

I agree... I have the 1/2 hp as well and it handles all you can give it... Just did 4 lbs of Pops fresh breakfast sausage yesterday... don't have a stuffer yet but that's gonna change shortly....

I use to grind meat on my Kitchen Aid with grinder attachment. The meat came out kind of heavy and wet. Switched over to a more powerful dedicated grinder and the meat doesn't leak juice and even has a "fluffy" texture.

No need to go big for those numbers?

If you are going to grind up deer, bear or buffalo?  Maybe go bigger?

Good luck and good smoking.
