My first smoker. I will be modifying it. I'd like a thread for folks with this smoker who have modified it, or are interested in doing so.

My first mod: door seal. I purchased the LavaLock 12 GREY High Performance BBQ gasket smoker seal, self stick, on Amazon for $18. It's a huge percentage of the initial cost of the smoker! My door leaks like a seive; it's warped, and there's no seal at all. I am hoping this will help. I'm toying with the idea of installing a couple of steel cross-braces on the inside edge of the door to keep it flat.

Other mods I'm thinking of:
  • thermometer calibration or upgrade;
  • chimney;
  • insulation;
  • wood chip drawer, so chips can be renewed without opening the door.

Thoughts?

I installed my door seal. Wow, what a difference! The door comes off easily, so I brought it indoors and spent about an hour de-greasing the sealing surface using Purple Power. Once done, I rubbed the surface with alcohol. The seal installed easily except it's tough to start peeling the backing paper.

The smoker used to leak smoke all around the door edges. I had to replenish the wood every 30 minutes. Now the smoke only comes out the damper, and I got 3 hours out of the first load of wood! Only recharged it once to smoke a turkey on almost 6 hours.

Incredible upgrade for $17!

I will post a before and an after video if I can figure out how to do so.
