Hello everyone I'm new to all this and have a few questions my masterbuild  40 you can set to 275 and it reaches it. but if you use a different thermometer it reads low and I don't understand it is there something wrong or does it get its reading another way. its like 20 degrees different do I go by there's or keep using my own thermometer thanks

Welcome to SMF.  My first question is what other thermometer are you testing with?   Have you confirmed that it itself is accurate?  Did you do a boiling water test to check it?  If not get a small pot of water boiling and test the temp with your other thermometer.  It should read 212 degrees. Once it is determined as being accurate, we can then move forward in determining the difference between the two.
 
Thanks for the reply. I'm using a ivation bbq thermometer and I just did the rest and it's reading 212
