I have made lump coal It's not that labor intensive. I start with a 30gal metal barrel. I fill it with pieces of wood. Then put it upside down in a open top 55 gal barrel with a few holes in it. I shoot the holes close fo the bottom.. Fill the barrel with wood. cut a hole in the top and add a 6' or so piece of stove pipe for a chimeny. Set it on fire and walk away for 24 hours. Make sure it is cool before you open the top.

Happy smoken.

A lot of different types of  Biomass can be used, however I would suggest only using items that are safe for using as cooking fuel in its natural state.
I make all of my own charcoal. It is not hard and you know exactly what you are getting. That is if you know the wood you are using.
