Making your own charcoal?

  1. Just wondering if any of you make your own charcoal?

Is it even worth doing or will it just be another hobby my wife shakes her head at....

    Yep its easy.
Look in my signature for a link on how I made my lump.

  3. I have made lump coal It's not that labor intensive. I start with a 30gal metal barrel. I fill it with pieces of wood. Then put it upside down in a open top 55 gal barrel with a few holes in it. I shoot the holes close fo the bottom.. Fill the barrel with wood. cut a hole in the top and add a 6' or so piece of stove pipe for a chimeny. Set it on fire and walk away for 24 hours. Make sure it is cool before you open the top.

    Happy smoken.

  4. Thanks for the replies! I'm gonna give it a try some time here.

Any specific woods I should use or stay away from.

A lot of different types of  Biomass can be used, however I would suggest only using items that are safe for using as cooking fuel in its natural state.

I make all of my own charcoal. It is not hard and you know exactly what you are getting. That is if you know the wood you are using.
