I have a 40" Masterbuilt. Trying to decide if the mailbox mod is for me. Currently I just light my amazen tube and put it on the bottom rack.
My main question is: Why do I need it?

If the tube works for you as you say, no real need. many that use the mailbox mods are those that use the tray.

I tried using my tube in a mailbox but I just tried using one of the existing vents on my smoker. Didn't work well and then realized I need to cut a hole in the upper chamber, I have a propane smoker, so the smoke can be drawn in. Using the original vent didn't work so well as it was at the same level as the burner.

Some folks do have success with the mailbox but I think they're the tray folks mostly.

The MB mod cools the smoke so you can cold smoke stuff.. It also collects creosote before it gets to your food...

What I like about using the mailbox mod in my MES40, is that I can switch from Alder to Apple pellets without affecting the temp in the smoker. Not opening the MES unnecessarily is a very nice feature.

My reasons for a mailbox were also related to not opening the smoker. I had several failed attempts at lighting my AMNPS tray and keeping it lit. Once properly lit it worked well, but several times relighting it cost me at of time on a smoke. Open the door and restart your cook time, in my case. Now I can relight as many times as I need to and not loose heat in the smoker. Of course as luck would have it, once I added the mailbox I got quite good at lighting the tray. I still use it just in case. I got it now, what else am I going to do with it ?
