Even though new, are they marked food safe? Apparently there is supposed to be a symbol stamped on the drum? Cup & fork or similar.

Honestly, I've bever been too concerned with that. A good burn out should remove any nasties left behind. Shit...the one my uncle used for 20+ years had trans fluid in it. ATF +4 makes a good undertaste for brisket....there, you got my secret outta me.

I'd make sure they aren't galvanized( or some other plating that may have heavy metals ). They look awfully corrosion free for having been outside?

Just heard back from the seller, no plating but weren't food grade. Again, not too worried about that.

I find it funny how folks will make a smoker out of used propane tanks but worry about 55 gallon drums....burn it out, all is good. Get a few burns in it with a light coating of oil and its all sealed in if you still have concerns.

Just speaking for myself, by all means, you do you.

My concern isn't with 55 gallon drums, or any other vessel for that matter. I just like to know what's been in them and/or what they're coated with. Propane tanks/compressor tanks don't bother me a bit, as they're bare carbon steel on the inside.

use the same fluid in the tranny of my 2005 Wrangler...lol

A good spray with acetone should mop up most chemical residues....but like you said, fire cleans everything.... Post some pics. of the new build....'cause you know we like pics! LOL!
