My family and I visited my brother in Kansas last week and he smoked a pork loin on a Brinkmann electric. It was delicious. He also informed us that what we do up here is 'grilling' not 'BBQ'.

We then drove to Ohio and back. On the return trip we stopped in at Pappy's Smokehouse in St. Louis  for a fantastic meal. Since I'm on this forum you can probably tell I'm hooked and will soon be buying a smoker.

The ones available locally are the Masterbuilt Electric Digital and a Bradley Electric (non-digital). I'm leaning towards getting the MEC (looks like a 1st gen, controls on top at back?) and ordering an AMNPS.

Any suggestions?

I'm also a new hunter and would like to try and make some jerky in the fall, and use the smoker for wild meats (mostly WT deer).

Cheers,

Bob

Hey,
I am one Province to the east of you...hope you and your family are safe from the floods in Calgary and area and Medicine Hat. I am new to smoking, I made some amazing ribs on my new Masterbuilt Pro Dual Fuel smoker. It was a Father's Day gift, they picked it up at Home Depot for less that $200. I love it. But I also loved my first car, a 1965 Pontiac, because it was mine! There are probably better models, with more bells and whistles, but I am on a steep learning curve with mine and getting better at controlling temperature.

The forum here is outstanding...they helped me through my first smoke, which was ribs. It was an outstanding meal. My first disaster (today) I relied on a different website and it ended up one of the grossest meals ever. I followed the "award winning" recipes from the other site to a T, and the end product tasted like your average salt lick. Good thing the chicken thighs i ended up tossing out only cost me $10! SMF is the place to be!

Yes safe from the floods. The local river valley didn't get hit too hard, unlike areas close by like High River, Canmore and Calgary.

I imagine I'll have some smoking disasters as well, part of the learning process. Perhaps I'll start off with some cheaper cuts just in case.

Cheers

Hello fellow Canadian. I live just down the road from you in Cranbrook, BC. I just started smoking last fall and didn't have much success until I found this forum. There is so much information in the posts and the experienced smokers are so generous with their advice. I'm sure you will love the forum as much as I do.

Another Canadian here, live in the US, but from Calgary.  Glad you weren't affected by the floods!  Many of my friends have been displaced.

I haven't had my smoking disaster yet.  I'm sure it's coming!

Be sure send us some of those "Action Shots" (or Q-view as we call it ) when you get your new Toy.

Good idea with the cheaper cuts... Chicken is a good beginning and from there a great Smoke is Pork Butt , easy , forgiving and really good too
