I have a camera on my phone. Never used it. Never sent any one anything. I'm not starting anything that is not within my purview of life. A picture is worth a thousand words for illiterates. Sorry, that is my POV.

Just  FYI  I'm not Illiterate , just think pictures add a lot to the post, In my opinion this site would not be near as good without the pictures,

I agree, pics add to what I read. Makes it easier for everyone to uunderstand whats going on.

Don't disagree at all with you folks.I am happy with your work. I've learned lot's here. I've owned WWII Voightlanders and Rolexes, so it's not the camera;it's the learned protocol to move pix from here to there. DILLIGAFF. THAT'S it.

I am thinking the problem is not enough was posted the last two days. You got the big Easter blitz and now we are sort of let down so we need something to discuss.

There are as many ways of information, illustration, and education as ways to smoke meat. No one is right for all. Sometimes long is good, sometimes when its a nekkid chicken or a low and slow butt for the twelveteenth time we assume others can use the search bar or ask thier question. Its simply more productive IMHO. If its something different like a Qaliarnini (Yeah... try and look that puppy up), it takes some time for the education, this is where the illustration comes to help with the education.

If you are just achieving something new or special and want to share, Gwad thats as important. To share your achievements is what we all really want to see. But a Nekkid chicken although pretty and tastee can only be done so many times before it loses all its Bazinga (well to most folks anyway).

There is no right way, no wrong way, there is the way you apprceciate and others may go another way. I learn here daily, because I am looking for the reasons why, Sometimes they are not in the picture or write up, they hide around the edge of my understanding waiting for that light to come on over my head. They probably teach it at CAS, but when that light comes on because I figured it out.... Its like finially figuring out one of those stupid wooden block puzzles!

Sometimes now I do pictures, recipes, proceedures, explainations. More and more I am just posting a supporting thread and the couple of pictures of how it did this time.

I think its great that some of yall make a journal of your smokes to share. That way newbies can just follow your lead. I still think there is a load of info out there you just gotta dig for also.

Left or right, good or bad, 1/2 full or empty, whatever your view, we pretty must support your type interface requirement here. Thats a good thing.

OK Guys, I'm not illiterate, and I seriously doubt anyone else here is, however I may have an extra reason for wanting  to see your pictures.

A long time ago the left side of my Jaw began swelling up after eating. Then it would go away after a couple hours. Then swell again after eating again. Then one time it wouldn't go away. It just kept getting bigger & bigger. Then it got painful, and I began to get a fever. I finally went to the Emergency Room. The diagnosis was "Sialolithiasis" (Salivary Gland blockage), and I was told to stop at the drug store & get some very, very sour candy. I did & I sucked on one piece after another until about 2 1/2 hours later. It just kept getting bigger & bigger, and the skin was even getting tight on the side of my face, from my neck all the way to my ear. Then all of a sudden my mouth got full of saliva, and the swelling began reducing. That sour candy built up so much pressure in my salivary gland that it blew the calcium stone right out of the ducts.

It happened again & again over the next few years on both sides, and sour candy always flushed it out, but I haven't had it since I've been smoking meat & looking at all the Awesome pictures of food on this forum. The drool causing pictures on this forum keep my salivary ducts well drained & healthy.

So keep on showing those Fantastic pictures Boys & Girls----You're keeping the Bear out of the Hospital. I saw what a salivary gland removal operation is like, and I don't want one of them!!!

Thanks,

Bear

And I've had two of those surgeries.

Yep, keep the mouthwatering pics coming!
OMG---I feel for you!!

I watched that operation on YouTube back then.

The gland is all wrapped around the Jawbone. Not Pretty!!

My Brother got the same thing a few years after I did, and he was scheduled to have it operated on. The night before his wife asked me to talk him out of the operation, and I did. He hasn't had a recurrence for well over 10 years now, and like I tell him, "He still has a Pretty face"!!

And another Reason for Pics, Most everybody is proud of their cooks and like to show everyone. Maybe we could post a Step by Step of "How to use your camera phone and post pics" for those who are "Phone Camera Challenged"

LOL---That hurts!!

I don't have a cell phone since I had the old easy to operate Nextel with "Two-Way", and I told Mrs Bear it doesn't bother me, but I wish I had one for if I break down along the road, on one of the rare occasions that I leave the house alone in my Truck.

She said I could show you how to use mine, and you could take it with you.

I just rolled my eyes & replied, "No Thanks".

BoatBum, good for you!  Great topic and like most it stirs opinions and subsequent discussion.  IMO, while there are going to be all types of people posting here, it would be nice if a bit more detail was provided along with the photos that many seem to enjoy.  It doesn't have to be substantial unless the individual wants to but still would be nice to know simple basics:

- Time (duration) for the smoke

- Equipment Temp(s) used

- Wood used,

- Rub / Sauce used

- Meat temp when pulled.

Are we that pressed for time (ahh... we are smoking here, right?) or so sensitive to secret recipes/techniques that we aren't willing to share some basics?

There's actually a lot more info given on Threads now than when I started 6 years ago.

Every time I wanted to try something new, I used to look up 6 to 10 threads of the same meat. Then I would take notes of what temp they each did, how long, if and when they foiled, foiling juice?, etc, etc. Some guys gave temp, but not how long for each temp. Some gave when they foiled, but no temps. There were none that gave everything in one thread. Then I would view the notes and I made a plan by seeing which of those things the majority agreed on. That would give me a starting plan. It took hours, but it always worked. I would then make adjustments on my own, depending on the results.

That was when I decided to make my threads into Step by Steps, so anybody new like I was at that time can just follow everything needed right on my individual Step by Step. Once you do it awhile like I do, it becomes second nature. There may be things on my Step by Steps that some people think aren't needed, but I put them there in case anybody wants to know it.

There are a number of guys on here that are doing much the same nowadays, and are pretty easy to follow. I won't name them, because I don't want to miss anyone.

This is a Great Forum, with a lot of Great Guys on it !!!

Let's not forget that Jeff has a lot of Great Step by Steps, and you can find them at the bottom of my Step by Step Index, along with GaryS's and SQWIB's.

Bear
Bear,

I agree with you on not being able to name all the people here who have helped me out in one way or another to make me the cook I am today.  If I had to figure it all out experimenting on my own I would probably still be boiling ribs!

Your step by steps have allowed me to start with a level of confidence much higher than if I didn't have them.  When I first came to this site I couldn't believe the help I received and still do.  Of course, as I learned and gained experience, I also gained confidence.  That confidence gave me courage, courage to do things like take a piece of meat and try all kinds of things with it to see what would happen, how it would taste, what color it would turn, etc.  It usually gets eaten, sometimes we file it under favorites, sometimes we file it under "OH MY GOD!  Let's keep this as a reminder so we NEVER do that again!  But it's all part of the ever learning experience.

Now, back to my original two thoughts .......

One ..... THANKS to all of you who contribute anything, pics, recipes, stories, whatever, you make the site what it is.

Two ..... I'm guilty of just posting pics and saying "look at this", but if it's something like a pork butt that has been done the same way 20 times and just happens to be visually amazing, well, I think that's ok.  Now, if I made up something that not only looked good but had say a sauce that I had either created or found a recipe in some obscure place, then I try to share that information as well as the pics.

Now that's just me but I wanted to put my $.02 in because this site has helped me so much in such a short time and all you guys on here are responsible for that.

The pics of modifications to rigs are good. You can describe all you want with words, but a pic can let someone see it and say, Oh, THAT.

Edited to add, that goes double for the DIY builds.

Wow I never knew that could happen! I bet you looked like Rocky Balboa. Do you have any pics?

LOL----If I had any, I wouldn't show them. Wasn't Pretty!

I can tell you that I was the only one I ever heard of ever having had that at the time, and the Dr said it's not hereditary, so it wouldn't mean my Son would get it.

Then like I said above, my Brother got it----Not Hereditary???

Then a few years ago, my Son got it------Hmmmm----That was the only 3 I ever knew personally that had that problem---Me, My Brother, & my Son, but Not Hereditary????

Confirms my thoughts on Dr's.

Guys, I just skimmed this thread and will come back for a more detailed look.

I post a lot of information with my pics, sometimes too much, to the point I don't get any replies.

I think their brain is numb after reading one of my threads, however I would hate to loose out on a great shot of some awesome "Q" because someones scared off by not wanting to add details.

I do agree that details help us and to be quite honest, this is easily remedied,

Why not start an "EYE CANDY" thread, pics only, I know of another forum that does this with great success.

I have an EYE CANDY Page on my website, folks just look at the pics instead of reading my ramblings, If they are interested in the details, they can click on the picture to take them to a page wit the recipe and details.

Just finished with the thread 3x, pretty good discussion going on, one comment really caught my attention by blue whisper,

The pics of modifications to rigs are good. You can describe all you want with words, but a pic can let someone see it and say, Oh, THAT.

This is so true.

Bears observation has been my experience as well

There's actually a lot more info given on Threads now than when I started 6 years ago.

I have been on SMF almost 8 years and I did the same thing Bear did...a lot of homework, I guess that's what prompted me to be more detail oriented.

On of the first things I learned on this Forum was to keep a journal and take accurate notes, this has helped me greatly over the years and now others can benefit from my trial and error, triumphs and tribulations, failures and successes...etc..., see I like to ramble.

Detailed notes helps me just as much as it may help someone else, I am always referencing my postings and websites.

We have to be careful imposing certain things such as asking everyone to post Temp, Time, Weight etc...

I am sure the folks posting just pics will learn to take notes and share, but sometimes a simple pic posting looking for a pat on the back is great for morale.

We all need a little pat on the back once in a while and to be quite honest it is very disheartening to spend weeks or even months on something, post it all proud like and not get any KUDOS. Are we looking for KUDOS? sure we all want approval and praise from our fellow chefs, whether we admit it or not.

I like a ton of info but if the poster just has a pic and I am interested I can always pick his brain, he will eventually come around.
