Just started composting and am trying to be as green as I can. I have always put my left-over ashes and chip in a metal can. Has anyone put this in a compost pile?

It is supposed be good in the soil.

We don't have soil or grass here in Las Vegas, so I mix my ash (and coffee grounds) into the area where I trained the dog to poop, which is small sized loose gravel on top of the dirt. It helps to keep the flies away and the smell is not as bad.

The key to making good compost is layering ingredients and not using too much of one type.

Ash is fine in moderation (as are leaves, grass clippings, etc.)
