I'm cleaning my deep fryer, and while I'm at it, I'm thinking about hush puppies.,

I always make a mess when I fry them, and it's hard to control the batter when I drop them with a spoon.

Does anyone here have a better way? The batter is always somewhat loose, so I can't make balls out of it. I was thinking I might put the batter in a plastic bag, cut the corner off, and squeeze batter out.

I like my puppy's round, a bag works ok but you get cigar shapes, a ice-cream scoop with the flipper on it works well, give it a swipe in the oil some as you go along so the batter doesn't stick.

HI! Buy a silicone spoon that fits yur size ? ( they are cheap now !) Dollar store?
Dip the spoon in oil spoon out yur product and roll it in the spoon to coat the ball.
I do the same to make meatballs.
Can put on parchment paper then into the freezer to firm up.

I've always used a spoon dipped in the oil. Thicker batter will help. I make my batter ahead of time and let it sit for awhile in the fridge. It seems to thicken up that way...

The scoop thingy is also perfect for gougeres and other choux things.
