Awhile back I did a couple simple mods to my Landmann 38 wide smoker. I picked up and inexpensive welders blanket, pop rivet gun and rivets, 2 side clamps, and some high temp tape for the seals. Everything turned out great and I am able to control my temp much tighter now. The outside is even slightly warm to the touch so that helps a ton too. I'd love to get my hands on second one and do a two tier smoker!
After I was done I had to of course test it and just had happened to have a belly of bacon that was curing. What luck!
