Hello

I recently purchased a Ivation 2 probe thermometer unit. As I am a Rookie to smoking ,the probe attached to the grill is reading 60 degrees hotter.

Does the placement location of the grate probe effect the temperature this much?

What am I doing wrong? Has anyone experienced this issue...

Thank you in advance

Marco

Assuming your attached grill thermometer is accurate, which is usually not the case, grate temperature and hood temperature can vary significantly.  Depending upon placement and airflow through your smoker, the temp at the grate can vary by as much as 100F from the attached therm.  If you've conducted a boiling water test on your Ivation/RediChek/Maverick thermometer, smoke to it.  With time, it will be your best guide to build experience.  The therm attached to your grill/smoker is just for looks basically.

In my WSM the attached therm runs 75-100F below my RediChek therm.  Weather has ruined the attached therm.
