So long as I'm getting a good fresh smoke smell out of the upper vent, I'm golden... right? Even if I can't actually see any smoke?

(Comparing the 'stale' smoke smell I was getting while the smoker was warming up.)
 
i believe that some else here said it best...... " if you can smell smoke, so can your food"
 
Sounds as if your getting a good clean burn... I wouldn't change anything.
