I was at a dutch oven cooking class on Saturday and the guy that taught the class used a product called Insta Fire to light his charcoal. This stuff worked really well even in the wind.

Have any of you used this stuff to light your smokers? Was there any smell or bad taste added to the meat?

I would like to try this stuff but I don't want to add any unwanted  smells or tastes to my meat.

Thanks Charlie

I've never tried it but it doesn't sound good.

Q. Is there an odor?
A. Yes, there is an odor. We use Pine, Aspen, and Fir wood pellets that produce a lovely pine scent. The wax substance also produces a slight odor, similar to a burning candle.

Q. Can I cook with Insta-Fire?
A. Yes, as with any fire you can cook with the flame. Just be sure to allow proper ventilation to flame.

Pine and fir both are woods that are not to be used in cooking as they put off a lot of tars and resins. That said ,why would i want to use them to light a fire that i was going to cook over?

Just use a charcoal chimney .lights coals w/ no additives .

He used 1/4 cup of this stuff under a charcoal chimney to light the charcoal. We did not nor would I ever cook with it. We cooked with the charcoal.

Just trying to find out if anyone has used it to light their charcoal and what the results were. I am currently using a chimney with news paper which works fine but I am always looking for new ways to improve what I do.

Put a little cooking oil on your newspaper and that will make all the fire you need.
