Infrared thermometers

Recently I have seen more advertisements for Infrared thermometers. How accurate are these things and do they work well with food? I have seen a few people on Food channel using them but I still wonder how well they work for big cuts of meat. Does the thing just measure the outside of the meat or somehow can tell the internal temperature? Does anyone here use them?

These will only measure surface temperatures. They are also very accurate. We use them a lot on our road race cars to monitor tire temps, brake temps, etc quickly.
