In The Market For Washer/Dryer

I know it's not BBQ... But who else would you trust for an opinion on washer and dryers except the best forums on the net...

So we are in the market for some new ones... The wife is tired of buying used (I'm not)... We have always been a big fan of Whirlpool but reading reviews 8 of 10 say stay away...

MOst likely it will have to be from Lowes/HomeDepot... I know they are what I call seconds as is everything they sell But I don't really have much other choice... I will hunt around for somewhere else but I'm not sure there is anything..

But anyways... If I could get y'alls input on this I woulod appreciate it...

Your so right... That's why I say we WERE always Whirlpool and they WERE made in America... Not the case anymore...

I also meant to ask which ones to definitely to stay away from ??

Another vote for Speed Queen. USA made since 1908 in Ripon, Wisconsin. And a 10 year warranty as well! At least ours came with that.

One of my biggest regrets was after my Grandparents passed… not taking and passing up their 1960’s Maytag washer and dryer. They still worked like a champ… I kick myself for not taking them.

LG front loader if you’re going new. Nothing beats the old no frills, turn the knob stuff of yesteryear, but if you’re buying through normal channels- LG has been good to us.

Our LG does fine except for the rapid open and close valves. Very loud. And they are susceptible to the rotten egg smell. Well, that was until I started using Oxy Clean. No problems since.

I didn't know Speed Queen made home washers and dryers. I knew they were in commercial applications.

Speed Queen pretty much tops all the lists, however, I can't fit a top loader in our laundry room the way it's laid out. Front loader with the dryer stacked on top is all that works in the space.

Our LG does fine except for the rapid open and close valves. Very loud.

I installed water hammer arrestors on the hot and cold inlets. It quieted the noise some on my LG front loader. It still ain't silent, but it quieted it down some.

You don’t even have to have them at the washer, just somewhere in the line, like a gfci. And make sure the valves are open 100%, ours was really bad and a little twist on the valves improved the hammer noise a lot.

I got tired of buying new washers every 3-5 years, it's all junk at Lowes, home depot. Bought a speed queen and never looked back. It's so quiet you can't tell it's running, the model I bought came with a 7 year parts and labor warranty. White glove delivery, great experience.

It was easiest to add mine to the inlets behind the washer. Lowes has them made to go there. Easy peasy ........ take the hoses off, screw the arrestors onto the valves and put the hoses on them.

They do and they are great, same tech you see in Laundromats everywhere. They are engineered and tested for over 10,000 wash cycles, that's 25 years of typical household use. We love ours.

I have the arrestors installed, too. Still very noisy. Even replaced the valves a couple years ago. Good machines overall nonetheless.

I hear ya Justin, I left a Kenmore set at our old house that I bought at the Sear scratch and dent store in 1996, I replaced a could $2 parts and they were still going strong. Moved and got some GE garbage that broke immediately. then Speed Queen came to the house.

Jim makes a great point I neglected to make. Not only USA made… but made simple. No digital BS… just simple and strongly made!

Bought our set 2011. Dryer stopped heating earlier this year. Heating coil burned out. 2 screws to remove lower front panel and 2 screws to remove heating element. New heating element 30.00. Less than 30 min to fix.
Probably my fault it burned out. Vent hose basically completely blocked.
