I hit the send button before I finished my post. A friend built one very similar to the one there, out of shape-able refractory cement. Can withstand temps up to 2000* and it works really good.

That looks pretty cool!  It goes to show ya that everything doesn't have to be high tech to be functional.  I am gonna have to come up with a way to get mine off the ground too but could be ok with it just being a couple feet up.  I don't wanna have to get all the way on the ground to look in the oven.  I have had really nice pastries & other things from old earth ovens on Indian reservations.  I was thinking about doing something adobe-esque.

Here is a decent book discussing building earthen ovens.

I've been wanting to build a wood fired oven for a couple of years now. Of course I want the nice brick oven not the earthen oven because bigger has to be better, right?

I've also thought about building an earthen oven to play with then building a brick oven later. I'm currently acquiring bricks when I can find some cheap but that's hard to come by these days.
