A lot of you know about me being laid off since a year ago last February. A lot of you have sent me suggestions and I really appreciate that.  I made a major decision today to go back to college and finish my degree that I started in the late 80's. I went up to Kent State and they reinstated me after all these years. YeeHaw!!!!!  Here I am 53 and going back to school. My oldest son just graduated from there with a Bachelors. It will almost be like starting all over since it's been that many years but that's ok. Actually, I'm all excited.

Ray congrats on the decision

I got Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School running through my head right now :)  Seriously  Congradts and Good Luck

Way to go Ray, I'm 35 and my wife is 40 we have 3 kids and I went back to school but since I had the good income already I thought I'll lay back off of school so my wife could get her RN.  I work currently for a fortune 50 company that has been laying off people consistently for the last few years.  I always get nervous and think how I should have finished.  I'm happy for you, good luck and what will you be studying, maybe thermodynamics would be a good idea.

Well ray congrats on your decision and I'm glad for you. Maybe you can hook with a good teaching chef there to and trade some pointer. I hope that things go good for you.

Great to hear Ray. Take some Q to your teachers that will get your extra credit

ray, good for you.............i'm in a similar situation abd have been looking into it as well. any luck on grants?

Congrats on making the right move, and don't let the young guns intimidate you. I did the same thing when I was 60 yrs, old, just for a different reason. It's all good my friend.

As they say " your'e going to be 55 by the time you get your degree".  The correct response is "I'm going to by 55 anyway, may as well have my degree"  Congrats.  I went back at 39 to finish my BS Biology and get a MBA.  Your maturity will be a big advantage.  You will study harder, more than likely not spend a lot of time chasing skirts and dedicate yourself to earning the degree.  All traits I didn't have the first time around.  I'm 53 now, wife works hard and earns a decent living, been thinking about going back to study something to use as a second career.  Maybe teaching high school.

Good Luck

Al

Good for you Ray!  I've been kicking these thoughts around too but have been scared to death, but as I learned when I went back for a short time in my 30s, it wasn't that bad once I got back into the routine of things and I found like the others have said, being older and more focused on what I wanted out of it, made a huge difference.  It'll all be great for you brother!  My wife just graduated this year and I'm very proud of her...she went into physical therapy and heck I couldn't even pronounce words she had to spell!! LOL  I'd give her age but she'd kill me and stuff me in my smoker probably, but she was in her 40s and did it!  Just takes a lot of dedication which I think we have at our ages.  Good luck, you can do it man!

It sucks that you have to do this but it's really great to hear that you are not letting it whip you. Kudos for that.

This county needs more folks with your kind of spirit. I see by your avatar that you are or were in uniform which probably has a lot to do with it. I think everyone could benefit by a stint in the military. It may help restore some backbone to this nation, just like the kind that you display now.

Good luck!  and Good decision.  School has changed a great deal in the last 10 years.  I started in the early 90's and finished w/ a BS in '08.  Everyone is correct when they say that you will have an advantage over the kids.  You experience with put you ahead of the class.

Go get 'em Ray----You gotta do what you gotta do---Best of luck to you !

Hint---If you major in Fatties, you can graduate in less than a week, and start teaching the next day!
