Smoking Fanatic
Farnsworth mines from the end of Dec 08. No warrenty was offered at Walmart.
This is what I did this weekend. I drilled out the rivets in the back and removed the sheet metal backing. I removed the chip holder and cover then took the two screws out of the heating element plate to check on the terminal connections. They were fine as they should be at 3 months.
I have not been able to find stainless female slip on connectors to replace the original equipment but at this point the the back is back on with stainless screws so I can get back there quickly. The metal cover to the heating element connections is no longer held in place by the screws so I will no longer have to mess around with the inside of the smoker to get to the connections. I can do spot checks on the fly and replace the terminal connections if they show significant corrosion before a big smoke.
When I get some time off I want to talk to the folks at the local electric supply company to see what they would recommend to beef up this system and reduce the chance of the MES going DOA. I don't think there is enough heat back there to warrant rewiring with high temp wires. Although the 18 gauge wires look pretty flimsy. It's the connectors that are failing
