I am located in Mono, Ontario, Canada and all of this "smoker" stuff is totally new to me! I love welding and I happen to have a small tank at my disposal. The main cooking chamber grill will only be 12" deep by 24" long. From what I have been reading here, I will be going with a reverse flow design. I realize no self respecting Southern man would even be bothered with a little smoker like this, but for my first go at it, it should work! The tank is about 12" diameter by about 32" long. I'm thinking of using a 20 lb. Propane tank for the fire box.

It is a work in progress and I plan to keep reading and learning while I plug away at this project!

Welcome to the site, looking forward to seeing your build, The only thing to keep in mind is by the time you get your RF plate and grate in you are going to have very little head room left, but one of the members built one out of a scuba air tank !!!

Thanks for the advice. I am a little worried about the small diameter, but for a first build, it should be a good experience! I have given up on the 20lb propane tank for a firebox and decided to order some steel plate and build a square box instead. Instead of a plate for the RF, I was thinking of installing a rectangular tube instead to transfer the heat and smoke to the far end. I'll have to see what room I have once the cooking grate supports are in. A plate might just take up less space.

What do you recommend for the air inlets on the fire box. I have seen one on here with ball valves, but would like some other ideas to control air. The chimney damper is pretty straight forward. Just a flat plate that will swivel back and forth over the top of the stack.
