Hey guys I am at a crossroads here.

Webshots has changing their format completely and it sucks so bad

I have hundreds and hundreds of hours invested in posting , blogs and my website.

All my photos are hosted on this site and linked through my website and blogs as well as a lot of forums.

I really need to bite the bullet and ditch "webshots, smile" and start rebuilding now.

I was thinking about photobucket.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have over 7,000 pictures that need to be moved, out of that 7,000 I would say 20% is linked somewhere. They also sort the pics in date order and I don't see an option for folders.

stats as of now.
  • 74 albums
  • 63 downloads
  • 7,013 photos

I use photo bucket and it is going to a new format as well. I personally like the old format but I would recommend  at least giving it a look.

I have been using the new format for Photobucket and I like it. I can still have multiple albums and organize them how ever I want.

Id suggest giving them a try and do a few test with in with a limited numbers of images that way you don't transfer everything and not like it.

Good Luck.

I am happy with Photobucket too but I am not a computer guy at all

Did not care for flickr, but have been playing with the new photobucket, I really like it.

Sort of got sucked into webshots a long long time ago.

I started rebuilding my albums and really like the sub album feature, got about 100 uploaded (3 albums) woohoo 6,913 to go.

After I upload all the pics I'll start rebuilding the blogs and websites, you guys wont be seeing me much for the next several months.

Hopefully most of my posts here will not be affected.

I have several hundred on photobucket and since they changed their format I have not figured out how to resize my pic`s. On this site I do not have to but another one I use I do...

I've tried several photo hosting services over the years, but used Photobucket the most.......fairly recently I switched from Photobucket to Imgur....I MUCH prefer Imgur.
There are a lot of things I really like about it, but the drag and drop feature...where you simple drag and drop a photo onto the page makes transferring images super easy.

Photo hosting sites are OK, I guess, but I don't use them much. Have you considered buying yourself a domain name and creating your own website? It really isn't that hard to do but can be time consuming to get it started. Once you have a domain name you can rent hosting services from any number of providers. Once you have the website hosted, you can do all sorts of things including running your own forum. There is free software (ironically enough, also called "SMF" for Simple Machines Forum) for creating the forum. It has all kinds of features and add-ins including photo library management.

The big advantage to this is that you are the web master and control how everything is handled instead of photobucket or flickr or anyone else doing it.

I subscribe to photbucket but very rarely use it. I know nothing about your photo hosting service but I would look to see if they have any means of FTP'ng files. If they do, you might be able to set up one or more FTP processes that will download all your stuff to your personal system. Similarly, your new service might have and FTP portal that you can upload them through. Worth checking.

What kind of storage can you get with a domain name?

I've used smugmug.com for years. Their picture sharing options are very good, but I originally went with them because they promote themselves as a photo backup service. They have several different options allowing for uploads of just pictures (unlimited storage), I've recently started using their option to upload video as well. They have pro versions of the site allowing you to sell, etc, so you can go as basic or as fancy as you want. There are also security options that let you set what is shared and what is just stored and/or give password access to certain photos. When I joined they had 3 datacenters across the US that replicated your photos and they offer a service that allows you to get all of your full sized photos on disc, if you were ever to have a total loss at your house.

I think I pay something in the neighborhood of $40-$50/year for my storage. You're welcome to check out what I have at http://maekchu.smugmug.com/. What you see there is a small percentage of what I have uploaded. All of my family pictures are up there, I just don't share everything with 'the world.'

*** edit, being a newby, they're holding my original post regarding this site. it should be available shortly ***

Oh, and if you go with Smugmug, do a search for sendtosmugmug. A guy has written an app that, when installed, allows you to right-click a folder and upload photos as a large group. In the app you can name the folder, set permissions, etc all in one step.

Well I screwed up again, did not do enough homework.

Ditched photobucket after 1,200 photos and 3 pages of website were updated. Paid for 20 gigs and that was filling up fast (You guys know I like  my pics)

Went with flickr, due to unlimited pics for 24.95 and no compression. Photobucket reserves the right to use your photos if they wish I DON'T LIKE THAT.

I dont like the interface on Flickr as much, however its one of the most popular sites for a lot of Photographers due to no compression and unlimited uploads for $24.95.

Webshots really screwed up with their unanounced change to Smile

Smile my @ss sorry folks I'm a bitter lemon and got a lot of work to do.

About Halfway there uploading photos, will start rebuilding the websites and blogs in a few weeks.

3500 photos so far

I have 120 web pages to fix and that's only one site SQWIB Cooks, I really hate Webshots. I did not realize how much stuff I have out there!!

Hopefully my photos on the blogs are embedded and not a url, please pray for me lol

I don't recall there being a size limitation on my hosted web page, but godaddy or any other hosting company can tell you if there are any.

I wasn't aware that your photos were linked to your blog and web pages. In those circumstances I would definitely want to have the pics hosted on my own space, not that of a photo hosting company. Imagine what will happen to your blood pressure if (God Forbid!) you should get all the files moved then discover that you have a problem with your new host and have to do it all over again.

Hosting your own web page is not all that difficult. I wrote one from scratch including learning HTML in about 3 weeks. It included all the web page content from my high school class of over 700 (including yearbook photos), a music box, a forum, and photo albums. I decided early on that I would not link to any external content and risk what might happen to that content and consequently to mine.

Woohoo Finished

Now I can start rebuilding my posts

If anyone comes across missing photos from my post, send me a PM so I can fix it...thanks.

Some of the posts I made on this site help me rebuild.

Funny thing, out of at least 7,000 photos I can not find my biltong box photos, I had about 5 or 6 photos.

Here are the pages I had to fix on the website, some pages had anywhere from 3 - 30 photos.
