I started a new rabbit hole hobby this winter!
I’m tying trout flys or attempting to😂
I’ve been watching YouTube videos for the last 2 months. It’s very intriguing work tying materials to a small hook but it very rewarding and I’m getting better and faster with each one.
I can’t wait till Spring gets here to try them out.

Anyone else on here tie flys?
Thanks for looking
Here at Mountain Home, Arkansas we hold a yearly conference on fly fishing. Brings people from all over the World. No joke.
Banjo Man out.

I've always wanted to learn to fly fish. Hear in ND there aren't very many people that indulge. I guess now and days there is YouTube University unlike 25yrs ago when days didn't go so fast and responsibilities were fewer

Fly fishing isn't really hard to catch on....pun intended! Catching even smallish fish is fun. I've caught everything from trout to pike on mine.

Considering I am a gear junkie and like to tinker I always figured it would be a hobby that I would constantly be tweaking things. I like to think that I am better about it with age now. If I were to get into it I would probably want a bass/pike setup and then something more along the lines for crappie and bluegill. More than likely would probably start with bass.

I started with trout. Then one day a pickerel hit a wet fly I was using. I had an absolute blast fighting it! Small poppers work good for bass, crappie, and blue gill. A good beginner set up is the Martin Caddis creek.

Just thought I’d share this. Pete’s spike elk from this last year. Took it with his Grandpa Blair’s lever action 308. We chose to do a Euro mount as in all my years hunting I’ve never seen a spike so thick tined and if you zoom in… there are some drop tines at the base. Kinda unique spike in my opinion.

looks neat to me. I don't know much about elk by any means so those points at the base would those possibly be the brow tines starting to take shape for the future? Just asking because I truly don't know the various stages of elk growth.

Daughter #2 (11yrs) got her first animal with a rifle this past Sunday. Turns out there is a guy that runs a game preserve and brings in various exotic rams that is only 2hrs away. He had donated a $1,500 youth ram hunt to our SCI Chapter (Red River Valley) banquet live/online auction first weekend of March. I didn't bid on it because I was busy running something at the banquet. When Shane checked in afterwards with me he gave me a very reduced price on 1 he had to get rid of beings he will be getting some more soon. Worked out perfect for a little congratulations surprise for the daughter passing hunter safety the week before and to get her some experience after her miss on her first deer this past fall on last day of season and not getting another opportunity.
Yes this was a high fence hunt but it was not sit in a blind and shoot off a feeder. Ram was actually hard to get hidden from and at 1 point was only 10yds from us. At supper close range 3 times before we could get out of its sight enough to hide again in the tree edge. It was coming by at a good clip at about 40yds, I did a bahh and it stopped, she made a great shot and it stiffened up, beings it stayed standing I had her hit it again and it was over. After gun was on safe she was hust shaking and I asked if she was excited, she said "no I'm terrified" and then I'm thinking I just scared my daughter but then everything sunk in, we hugged (I might have got a little teary) smiled, unloaded the gun and met Shane (owner) at the ram. She eventually stopped shaking and as the pictures show became very happy with herself, she wants to go back even. Ram was broken down ad meat taken home, haven't taste tested yet and we stopped to drop off the head for a euro mount with a gal that the outfitters knows.
In 1 week spring turkey opens and both daughter's have tags for home. 2 weeks we take our father daughter's turkey hunting trip to western ND and all 3 of us have tags there. I have been very blessed with daughter's that have found a love of the outdoors and hunting.
Sorry for the long post

Thank you to Shane with Rams on the Ridge. If you are within a few hours from Alexandria MN and want to get kids out or looking for something for adult kids check him out.
One last thing, we used a 6.5 Grendel with 123gr ELD-M on a handload I developed and the night before Claire helped load them, she did the powder fill and bullet seating

We tried a couple small pieces backstrap from the daughters ram this weekend, they aren't very big. #1 had a dusting of Meatchurch Blanco and Killer Hogs TX (my grab and go choice for smaller things) #2 got a coat of Tuffy Stone Daily Grind (got for Christmas and have really been liking on red meat), let them chill in the fridge for a few hours. Got the fry pan hot with some butter and beef tallow and seared on all sides about 6min total and ended up at about 135-140 IT after rest but still looked a solid medium doneness. Daughters, wife and I all tried some and it was pretty good, didn't taste like anything special really and not off putting at all we would all eat it again. Texture is different with the fibers being kind of more coarse than whitetail, very similar to my Aoudad.
Everything is all trimmed, bagged and frozen for some kind of sausage project probably. I only got about 8lbs of trim, kind of thinking about doing some venison bacon with the kit from Owens BBQ.

Found a keeper for sure if you all want an easy Euro or skull mount. This one is pretty slick! We’d drove the nail in the wall the night before and I planned to help him hang his spike the next evening… as it’d been a 16 hour day at work. He sent me a pic the next morning that he had hung it… “Can’t wait for the old man huh?” Ha, he done a great job. And as a side note, we lost Grandpa Blair back in ‘17… Blair back in his day was a great hunter… I do believe Blair smiled down a bit bigger that day as I could feel it as Pete took the elk with Blair’s old lever action .308 And Pete was beyond proud! And I was damn proud of him as I know Blair was.

Harvest pics on post #408

Posted the Euro or skull mount on post #611

There’s the mount system we used… again… very user friendly and clean.

Ok, I feel like @Steve H here… Yea, you all know what’s coming… and unlike Steve… I can‘t even blame my son this time… 😉😂

Anyway, any shooters or hunters out there that are interested… found this today via text from Midway USA. Couldn’t resist and pulled the trigger… 😊

Have always wanted one, but the original price was so steep when raising a small fam… money was needed elsewhere.

ND released their drawing results for the once in a lifetime elk and moose yesterday with bighorn sheep still to come, these are not on a points system. I didn't draw but my buddy's 14yr old son did, didn't sound like he knew what a big deal that was at first. They got a good amount of scouting and work coming this late summer and fall with the unit being a good 7hrs from home, at least it sounds like he has 1-2 good connections. Sounds like they are planning to take a 7RM and I offered to work up a handload for it and came up with the bonded bullet choices I like but of course do you think I can find any of them to order NOPE. I have ran Barnes heavily since probably 2006-2008 and will probably work on either a load with Barnes 150gr TSX or 140gr TTSX that I have sitting around (my 7RM currently doing 145gr LRX) or I think I have a box of Hornady 150gr CX. Typical shot will be under 200yds and more than likely 75-125yds max.
I might have to get in on the trip so I can at least get to experience a moose hunt and hopefully meet and get to know people out there in the snowball chance I ever draw

Thats awesome. We run on a preference point system here in Colorado, but it doesn't seem to matter as it is still a lottery. A few years ago, I drew a sheep tag with 3&1. I had to stop telling people that I drew with only 1 point. The guys with 20 were pissed lol. I am curious how your draw works though?
