As much as I hate to say it it's probably time to give the striper game fish status. Hell even bluefish are in a bad place right now. The major problem here is the decimation to the pogies by the omega protein industry and that doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon.Save the pogies and everything else will fall in line.

We don't have the hybrids up hear that i know of, all of them are pure saltwater.
Hybrids, or hybrid striped bass, are a cross between a white bass and a striper and do not occur naturally. Some people call them wipers. They have broken stripes and the body shape is shorter and fatter, more like a football. They don't get nearly as big, either. World record is 27 lbs. 5 oz., but fish over 10 lbs. are considered a trophy. They are usually only found in fresh water and my personal best was 11 lbs. caught in Cherokee Lake in Tennessee. Actually caught 2 that size there...

Came across this article over my lunch. A guy shot a paddlefish on their bow fishing trip in Kentucky and it had a tag in its lip from South Dakota in 2023.
Wonder what they do with most of their catches. I know different people up here like to smoke paddlefish if/after they catch one during our spring season up here in ND. I've had it and like it myself, others say different.

switched to crappie for a change of pace. hit my trophy lake to find some hogs. 4th tree top i hit had 14-15"ers stacked in it. the yum twister tail slaughtered them as usual. after i wore out the Biggins CPR i tossed a pile of 12-13"ers in the ice chest. fished that tree top and hour or so and made my morning. lol whites, blacks, and hybrids caught in same tree.

2 epic battles on my crappie rod yesterday. first was a channel cat maybe 20". they always give a good thrill. at least she ran out in the deep water. after a good tug of war she tired out and i got my jig back covered in slime. lol the second battle was a real nail biter. what felt like a bigger cat turned out to be 22"s of largemouth! this one wasnt so kind as to head out of cover. she had me wrapped up and free i dont know how many times. i figured the leader or hook would fail at anytime. neither happened and i put the net under her after about 3 min of tugging. the light wire hook was starting to straiten out though! would have been just a lil longer and i would have never seen what i was battling.

most fish dont get me excited, like they used to, but this one was fun. lol after a couple of selfies to prove my "fish stories" i released her to grow bigger. she thanked me with some tail water. lol

That's a nice bass right there... So I went and looked at your avatar looking for where you (and the bass) are geographically but it's not posted... That's the purpose of putting your whereabouts (not exactly but in the vicinty) in your bio/avatar ...

Largemouth or any bass on light tackle is a blast. I have been targeting bass through the ice more and more over the years on a couple reservoirs that have them. Normally really small tungsten jigs or spoons are the ticket and lighter line like 3-4lb, the biggest game changer I have had the last 2yrs and landed my 2 PB ever came on 44" light and a 44" ultralight custom rods. Never got a scale on them and forgot the measurements but they were 4-5lbs easy. This past winter's went back after picture and the bigger one 2 winters ago is at the taxidermist. Now if only I would make time to get out with the long rods for open water fishing.

michigan indiana line if you want to know. there is enough info out there on everyone already dont ya think.

luvcatchinbas, we always used tip ups and live bait for bass under the ice. also jiggin raps and flash lures. we are aloud 3 lines so 2 tip ups working while we jig the third. if you ice fish youll appreciate this battle! 9.5#er grabbed my gill jig on 2#test on a shoolie reel!

the buddies commentary is a riot. this battle is full of mishaps that could have lost this fish of a lifetime! i was super lucky to be able to get a hand on her!!

In ND we get 4 lines in the winter and allowed to keep 3 bass. I have ran bobber rods with minnows for them as well in conjunction with jigging but now a couple of my go to lakes have small perch in them so it sucks dealing with them, on the up side the one has decent sized perch now at least. I just haven't had as good of luck with larger baits for ice bass but I still experiment, most times I don't care what bites as long as I am stretching string. When a guy sets into a nice one it is fun how the "stress" mounts as you know you are one tiny mistake from loosing them on light gear. I have lost a few nice fish on shorter rods that were 28" and under. Bass are so hard mouthed when using small jigs that it is tough to burry that little hook good and a longer rod with a forgiving back bone really helps absorb runs and shakes, a good reel with smooth drag is another thing.
You using a Schoolie setup is just awesome, that is talent, understanding your setup and great focus. Glad you had someone to share the experience with, unfortunately both of mine came while fishing by myself but it is what it is and weekend fishing didn't work with the kids schedules so beings I am slower in the winter I just take off a day here and there.

if legal use those lil perch for tip up baits! we do it all the time. cut the tail off so they cant swim as fast and anchor with some lead. a lil cut to bleed some for scent helps a lot. we also have northerns that smash these sets.

me n cuz whacking them way back

man i was thinner then. lol

The funny thing is that we can't use perch for bait like you do but we can pop a perch eye out of the fish (obviously a fish you are keeping) and put that on your as bait. This works great for perch and walleye and when fishing for numbers I have gone through 10+ perch on a perch eye vs 1-2 on a minnow head.
For pike I have done well using a hotdog and minnow with a treble hook (can't remember size). Tail hook a large fathead minnow on one of the trebles, run shank through the middle of hotdog (hook should be slightly larger that the width of hotdog) and attach to line. We have also done this with frozen smelt and in increases the hookup because that pike key on the center better and get that hook more often. For hotdogs the cheaper the better.

pike also love liver. they are scavengers too. i have caught them while catfishing with livers. i like the attraction of live bait way better. especially when using a rattle or small spinner blade(as you seen in vids). ive heard hotdogs many times over the years.

I was pulling my camper up the mountain road last fall for a drawn hunt on a wma here in Tn, had 3 bounce across the gravel road at about 11:00 am. the memory card in my video gps was bad and I didn't get it caught, my bad for not replacing it. I have 1 mounted that I shot years ago, not sure I would take another 1.

There are probably more than you realize because they're so elusive and wary. Those eyes and ears don't miss much. Years ago while bowhunting deer from a lock-on type tree stand, I came to full draw on one just to see if I could. Didn't take the shot, though, because I was waiting on 'Muy Grande'. The only thing I think is harder to draw on is a turkey...

Bobcats are really cunning and elusive. I know reliable stories of an old trapper in western ND that was great at catching them with some of his tricks. Lots of people figured there weren't that many but he would catch quite a few, maybe there weren't that many because he kept them in check but he would catch good numbers every year still.

We set traps for bobcats - unsuccessful as of yet. We also trap coyotes, possums, raccoons (hardly a skunk around).

The deer routinely destroy the bobcat trap-set. Specifically, they pull down the feathers or DVD'c/CD's we use as lures. We put cell cams on all bobcat (and coyote) traps - so we see exactly what the deer do.

There ought to be a season for deer... no ... wait 🤣

If you don't mind a "Yankee" asking, what is the problem with bobcats? I know they are a predator but are they invasive like feral hogs?
