Tough to beat cold water pike. Just have never mastered the boneless. Have watched numerous videos and when it comes to actually doing, its fillet massacre.
I pretty much like you. I have no problem doing a larger northern but those little slimmy grass picks are pretty much dog food by the time I try to get all the Y-bones out. I do prefer northerns for a better taste then walleye. Walleye really are pretty tasteless until you add stuff for cooking.

Thought I throw a pic of my wife's buck she got back in Dec. Mule deer buck and 26" wide. Not a monster but big enough to hang on the front of the garage when the snow/ice is gone. Big body which is what is more important than antlers to us. My grandpa used to say, "Antlers are only good for stirring the pot!" I've probably repeated that phrase over the years more than a few times.

I have no clue why she made that face. Maybe she mad at me for making her take a picture with the mount.

I had got good at it a few years ago when I was spearing more and was getting some pretty big ones. 5# or 30" minimum for learning helped a lot. Good sharp fillet knife and patience, I tried a method that starts by laying fish on the belly with looking at the top of the back, cut down to the spine and then follow to the tail-this method did not give easy boneless like the video. Worse case scenario is you bugger things up and you just cut into smaller pieces and make pickled pike

i couldnt get that down either. plus i dont like wasting the meat. lol thats why i just bake the fillets and then pluck the bones out. if you chunk and fry you can still break pieces open and pull the bones out. they are very fine also and im sure ive ate plenty of them not knowing. so im not sure eating them is all that bad. lol

I have a beaver/otter problem on my farm. Traps are set. So far got one 52 lbs beaver and...the reason for reviving this post. This crazy big otter!
Weight = 29 pounds. State record is 32!
Still have more to trap!

Also - Set 20 dog-proof and 2 live traps yesterday (raccoon, possum, skunk - aka - nest predators). Hoping to score big today.

Our rabbit season this year ran through March 1. A bunch of guys I grew up with have a deer club, but will hunt rabbits with dogs once deer season is over. I got to go with them this past weekend for a couple of days to hear the beagles do their thing. It was mostly just cooking, eating, hanging out around the fire, and telling lies. A cigar or 2 thrown in there and a few adult beverages, as well. You know, the usual guy stuff when a bunch of old friends get together...😆.

Anyway, Saturday was a pretty good day of hunting. Six cottontails and 1 swamp rabbit...

We had 22 dogs on the hunt and if you've never heard a pack of beagles running a rabbit, it's a sound you won't forget. It's an amazing sound and really all I go for is to hear them run...

I haven't rabbit hunted with beagles since college...but it was a blast. We only had 1 beagle too, but Pup was an AMAZING flusher. I can't even begin to imagine what 22 beagles would sound like!

Typically just a fall fisherman. Mostly all walleye, but the pike tend to interrupt at times. I fish a bit differently than most. I use handlines with a pound and a 1/4 weight. Smoked walleye is delicious.

I am currently trapping nest predators, raccoons - possums - skunks, so my wild turkey population thrives. I usually start mid February and run through the end of March (land owners get extra weeks past the Feb 28 Missouri trapping deadline). Running 20 dog-proof, foot-hold traps and 2 live traps. Takes about 45-90 minutes to run the trap-line in the Ranger depending on what I encounter.

Broke my old record of 5 critters in 1 day on Saturday. The new record is 7 😍. I did buy a new attractant (Coon Collector Bait - by Predator Control Group). It is a spray on - smells a little like licorice and Nyquil. It is clearly working!

I also use a whole smorgasbord for bait - peanut butter, sardines, dry cat food, whole kernel corn and marshmallows.

Smoked walleye is delicious.
So is fried . Had a Tavern here that did fresh caught Walleye on Fridays .
Nice catch you have there .

currently trapping nest predators, raccoons
We were feeding 25 % protein antlermax at deer camp in St. James . I had my feeder up 8 ' to the top ,but my buddy bought a shorter one that was only 5 ' . I have trail cam pics here somewhere of the racoons standing on top of each other at one of the legs , and reaching into the auger and swiping the feed out . First one on his back legs hold onto the feeder , second one standing on his head , and a third on top of the second . I'll see if I can find it . I bet those coons were 30 pounds .

Thanks, oh I do like it deepfried too. The fall fishing here is crazy. Lots of hungry big fish for about 6 or 7 weeks. Mind you I've been fishing in December too in my boat.

Got a buddy that has told me this before. I think he put those tack nail strips on his legs and that helped with keeping them from messing with the auger at least

Caught a pair of otters on a trail-cam visiting our lake. Got one of them ... one more to go. This one was a bit smaller, 20 pounds.

All otters and beavers must die! So destructive.

Trapping Tally - Feb 1 through Today
11 raccoons
4 possums
0 skunks (yay!)
1 beaver
3 otters

Raccoons, possums and skunks are nest predators for ground nesting birds (turkey, quail). Studies show they eat about 60%-70% of all ground nest eggs.

I have 3 more weekends for trapping nest predators. I need 11 more critters to tie the my record and 12 more to beat it.

I was just thinking with our warmer weather up here I need to start getting the coon cuffs out again
