I have composted dead nutria, pig carcasses, dogs, cats, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, frogs, rats, raccoons, opossums, crows, duck carcasses, chickens, and lots and lots of fish... They all feed the soil which feeds my garden plants. I see no reason why composting humans should not be an option.

This years garden bed I've trench composted 1 nutria, 5 squirrels, 1 rabbit, 4 crows (stealing neighbors duck eggs), and roughly 250~300# of fish carcasses. I also have 6" of yard waste compost spread on top. My garden grows spectacularly every year and I don't buy synthetic commercial fertilizers.

One waste stream that is under utilized is human urine. It has an avg. NPK value of 10-2-5 along with plant available calcium-0.025. One human generates enough urine annually to fertilize 300 square meters or 650 tomato plants.
You can literally grow everything you need using nothing but urine. It is sterile so poses no health issues. Can use directly on plants after proper diluting 5:1 with water.
I add my urine to my hot aerobic compost piles for a nitrogen boost during the spring and summer months....kicks the heat up to ~140* fast....

Yup---We composted most of the non edible parts of all kinds of animals.
We also had a cycle going with my Grandfather's garden:
I shot +20" Suckers with my Bow, and we caught some too.
Gutted & Took the Roe for Eating.
Gave the Bony Bodies to my Grandfather to rototill into his garden.
Dug worms from his garden for fishing.

I guess a Body is a Body.

I have used fish for composting before, but I don't anymore do to it attracting larger animals and/or having my dogs in the past dig them up. Definitely not into giving my veggies a golden shower - sorry Inda. Also there's something that gives me the heebie-geebies or weirded out willies about using something that I was attached to such as a pet or family member as fertilizer. I just don't think I could bring myself to doing it.

Living in the back-woods most of my life, I can honestly say I've been known to wet a few green things down after coming home late at night, before sneaking in the house, but never anything I was planning on consuming- Sorry here to, Inda.

I use urine mostly on compost...once the nutrients are cycled, it really does not matter what the source was....you know; circle of life and all that. Most all the nutrients in my garden comes from trench composted fish parts. Usually 250~300# a year during the summer. I have 2 beds...plant in one, trench compost and hot compost in the other, next year I swap. I don't have to shovel or move any compost, just level and plant. Makes it easy. And a year gives the fish plenty of time to breakdown. Man you should see the worms! 25+ per shovel....lots of fertile worm castings.....they love the fine ground bio-char for grit in their gizzards.

I do not have a problem with pests or pets digging in my compost piles. I fence it off with tin panels so nothing can really get to it. The hot compost on top of the trench compost absorbs all the smells and breaks it down in the hot compost. Never had a problem...not once.

Use to get a lot of rabbit pellets from a neighbor, but they don't raise rabbits any more....

Mom and Dad are in a mosoleum, all show and a waste of land. Me and my Wife, Cremation! I'm FAT enough that it should make a Helluva Fire! Told the Kids to place my ashes in a Ball Jar on a shelf in the Kitchen. I want to make sure they are not messin' up my Recipes!...
I don't Romanticize Anything. Humans are animals and animals make great compost. Horses should be a commonly available meat in the US as well as Guinea Pigs. Veal should be as cheap as Pork as the Dairy industry produces a lot of Calves and the cost of bringing Veal to the market is far less than the time, real-estate and feed cost there is to produce Beef!
I'd use my Urine on the garden but worry the dozen or so types of heart and blood pressure meds would be in the mix...JJ

Well Chris, I'm in for the big fire when I go.
Compost?? I can just picture Roxy digging me up and dragging a leg onto the deck to gnaw on. Somehow I don't think Miss Linda would see as much humor in the situation as I would. LOL
Gary

We've had our plots for a while now, and both my wife and I are gonna be made into ashes. Skidmark would probably dig me up and let loose a good wiss for not giving him any more treats.

My problem with composting at the lake is animals raiding the bin. Bears are by far the worst, give them a food source and you’ll have a friend until all the compost is gone. If the bears don’t get it the deer will finish it off during the winter.

Hmmm, Cremation here too:
In fact both of my parents ashes are in "Red Rock Run", Pike County, PA.
Look Out---Another Bear Story Coming:
My Dad used to tell my Brother & Me he wanted to be buried back at Red Rock, where we hunted & fished all of our lives.
We kept telling him, "Dad, you can't just bury people anywhere you want".
So years later Mom died, and she had wanted to be cremated, and she had said she didn't care what we did with her ashes, as long as they were with Dad's. So Dad said, "OK then, I want my ashes to be in Red Rock Run, just above the walking bridge, and don't tell me you aren't allowed to do that". So my older Brother said, OK Dad, if that's what you want, that's what John & I will do". So Dad only lasted another 2 years without Mom, and left us at the age of 71.
So my Brother & I got both of their ashes together, I drove the 70 miles to Saw Creek, and the 2 miles of Fire Lane trail (Luke Trail), and we walked the small trail the 2 miles that we traveled so many times (to Red Rock Run) in our hunting & fishing days.
Then my Brother walked up stream of the bridge, and poured the two bags of ashes slowly, together, while I snapped some pictures. Eventually I took the best picture, which luckily ended up looking like artwork, and I had it enlarged to 16 X 20, and had 4 of them made. I framed them, and gave 3 of them to my 2 Sisters & my Brother, and I kept one for myself.
Mine hangs in my house right now as a Remembrance.

End of Story,

Bear
