I wouldn't throw it out unless it had been injected.  It's an intact piece of meat, so the 40 to 140 doesn't really apply, or at least, it isn't so strict.

If the OP stabbed the piece of meat with a thermo right at the beginning it sure does. Which is what sounds like happened.

Hope he comes back and let's us know what the final verdict was.
