I just signed up for the forum last week.

I have had a masterbuilt 30" electric smoker for two years. About a month ago I purchased a brinkman smoker at a garage sale for $20. It's the a horizontal smoker with a heat/smoke chamber on the side. I have not used it yet as I have not had time to babysit it while using it. I may get to this weekend.

How often does one need to add charcoal/woodchips to this type of smoker?

Do most people use charcoal or wood charcoal?

I am from MN so it may be a bit challenging in the winter to keep a constant heat.

Hobbies include fishing and home brewing.

Hi Mike. I recently found this site also. Welcome to a fellow gopher. I have an off-set chargriller pro. After making a box for the charcoal (I use lump) out of expanded metal, I get about 4.5-5 hours of even heat without any other mods.
