I still have really good hearing in absolute terms. My problem, and have had it a long time, is differentiating conversation in loud environments. With all the restaurants seeming to go all hard surfaces, “rustic/warehouse” type settings, no absorptive treatments, etc , and then throw in music playing, it’s almost impossible to talk to people across the table.
Ive talked to a good audiologist, and she said there isn’t really any “noise-canceling” aids. They just play with the orientation/directivity of the microphones. And I already knew that frequency equalizer won’t work since the background human voices are the same frequencies as my companions.
She said they really don’t work well for my situation.

But sounds like most of you guys have more hearing “loss” and should be able to get good results. Good luck!

Years upon years of running chainsaws and brush chippers without hearing protection have given me some degree of tinnitus. I still hear well, but there is a constant ringing in my ears. I am mostly able to ignore it.

Mostly dumb on my part since eye and hearing protection were supplied by the company, but most of us skipped the hearing protection.

Always figured I might just need to hear anything happening on the ground while up in a tree, but no excuse for chipping brush without it.

I hired on at a natural gas compressor station at age twenty. The Supervisor was a tight ass about providing PPE so most of us didn't bother, until we needed to work around the turbines. They were screamers. Did that ten years, then moved into Measurement. Then it was blowing down meter runs and pig launchers. By the time I got into Gas Control, my hearing was pretty poor. Just ask my family. Hearing aids have certainly been a blessing in my later years.

OK, I gotta know, what is a Pig Launcher?
I assume it is not what I'm envisioning. Haha

No, but now I’m seeing hogs on the Monty Python Holy Grail catapult … “Run away!!” 🤪

Its a bullet shaped object with abrasive strips, launched into and propelled through water mains to clean off deposits on the pipe walls.

For inquiring minds needing to know …

The most widely accepted reason for the name pig was the sound it made resembled a pig squealing.

Emerging covered in mud resembling a pig, or that the bullet May have been made of leather in the early days are less accepted reasons.

(Can you tell I’m an old civil engineer and have done a lot of this? 😁)

Never heard the origin of the term. Just knew that pigs and slugs are used in the pipeline industry.

I'm an old electromechanical engineer. We made ordinance. Civils made targets

There are a number of different pipeline pigs that serve different purposes. For example, brush pigs and scraper pigs are run through a segment of pipe to clean it before running a Smart Pig that detects internal corrosion or damage (dents and pinholes). Liquid pipelines also use foam pigs to separate different products such as heating oil and diesel fuel as it is being shipped down the line.

WHAT A SCAM ... So I went to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) Dr. a month or two ago to see about my hearing... They took my $50 copay sent me back... Doc comes in a cleanse any wax build up... Then ask me if there was anything else I needed... DO WHAT ... I'm here to see about my hearing... "Oh, well you'll have to go to an audiologist for that... I was fuming... "Why Did they take my money when I told them I wanted to get my hearing seen about and them knowing they don't do that..

"If you go next door here to the hearing and speech Dr. they will fix you up" ... WTF ... So I stop in to see about getting in to see the Dr. ... "Oh No, leave your number and we will call you in a couple of days... Never did hear from them ... So I asked my primary for a referrel... Gues where he sent me... Back to this same place...

SO I go in do all my hearing test and everything... And then this Dr. proceeds to tell me I have to GO BACK to the ENT Dr. to get his "Blessing" that it's ok for me to wear heating aids ... YOU GOT TO BE F@#$'N KIDDING ME...

Sorry about the rant... just had to air it out...

I might just go buy some OTC aids... was looking at the Lexie B2 Powered By Bose

I would have made them call the ENT for a telephone referral being you had already been there.
I thought your hearing as OK as long as I got on your right side, but that was without any background noise and I faced you. I'm sure Celeste turns away from you to add a few comments. My wife tends to do the same.

JckDanls 07 JckDanls 07 , I went for a different reason, but glad I didn't have to go through the BS you did.
Audiologist appt 4 month and ENT was 6 months out. Busy places.

JckDanls 07 JckDanls 07 , your experience with that Dr's practice was BS for sure. If your hearing loss is significant enough that you are seeking professional help, it is likely that OTC hearing aids are not for you. The video in the link is very informative by a trusted Audiologist. Please heed his concerns. The two 'Cons' of being for mild to moderate hearing loss and the inability to stream phone calls and music to the hearing aid are huge. After reviewing the link and video, I think the Lexie B2 are OTC hearing aids at a Prescription hearing aid price.
Oh, and the one year warranty at a thousand bucks is unacceptable.

Point well taken...

I can hear for the most part. Some difficulty in load environments. What I've had for the past 40+ years is tinnitus. It was from my late teens and early twenties when I ran a jack hammer for hours on end without hearing protection. Back in the day we weren't concerned about our hearing, or our backs.

Now if they can find a way to address tinnitus..........
