I still have really good hearing in absolute terms. My problem, and have had it a long time, is differentiating conversation in loud environments. With all the restaurants seeming to go all hard surfaces, “rustic/warehouse” type settings, no absorptive treatments, etc , and then throw in music playing, it’s almost impossible to talk to people across the table.
Ive talked to a good audiologist, and she said there isn’t really any “noise-canceling” aids. They just play with the orientation/directivity of the microphones. And I already knew that frequency equalizer won’t work since the background human voices are the same frequencies as my companions.
She said they really don’t work well for my situation.

But sounds like most of you guys have more hearing “loss” and should be able to get good results. Good luck!

Years upon years of running chainsaws and brush chippers without hearing protection have given me some degree of tinnitus. I still hear well, but there is a constant ringing in my ears. I am mostly able to ignore it.

Mostly dumb on my part since eye and hearing protection were supplied by the company, but most of us skipped the hearing protection.

Always figured I might just need to hear anything happening on the ground while up in a tree, but no excuse for chipping brush without it.

I hired on at a natural gas compressor station at age twenty. The Supervisor was a tight ass about providing PPE so most of us didn't bother, until we needed to work around the turbines. They were screamers. Did that ten years, then moved into Measurement. Then it was blowing down meter runs and pig launchers. By the time I got into Gas Control, my hearing was pretty poor. Just ask my family. Hearing aids have certainly been a blessing in my later years.

OK, I gotta know, what is a Pig Launcher?
I assume it is not what I'm envisioning. Haha

No, but now I’m seeing hogs on the Monty Python Holy Grail catapult … “Run away!!” 🤪

Its a bullet shaped object with abrasive strips, launched into and propelled through water mains to clean off deposits on the pipe walls.

For inquiring minds needing to know …

The most widely accepted reason for the name pig was the sound it made resembled a pig squealing.

Emerging covered in mud resembling a pig, or that the bullet May have been made of leather in the early days are less accepted reasons.

(Can you tell I’m an old civil engineer and have done a lot of this? 😁)

Never heard the origin of the term. Just knew that pigs and slugs are used in the pipeline industry.

I'm an old electromechanical engineer. We made ordinance. Civils made targets

There are a number of different pipeline pigs that serve different purposes. For example, brush pigs and scraper pigs are run through a segment of pipe to clean it before running a Smart Pig that detects internal corrosion or damage (dents and pinholes). Liquid pipelines also use foam pigs to separate different products such as heating oil and diesel fuel as it is being shipped down the line.
