Just bought my 1st ever pellet grill. I picked up a Traeger Ironwood 885 while waiting on a Foreigner/Night Ranger concert at the State Fair. I'm old school. I've been smoking and grilling for a large number of decades now on whole wood charcoal and even tried out LPG for awhile. Kinda nervous about spending $1500 on a new grill. Anyone else have teething pains? I'm so used to babysitting a charcoal smoker grill (offset barrel) that I found the Traeger to be madding in its ability to be hands off. Any other Traeger users out there? This grill produces ALOT less smoke than I am used to, even on super smoke. Anyway, retired Air Force and currently in Law Enforcement with only 3 1/2 years until a 2nd retirement.

Glad to see you here. Yup, there is a learning curve when you first start using a pellet grill. I got my first one in June. I have smoked with a lot of other methods since the '70s. This is the most versitle. Give it a chance, try something new every week, and enjoy !
What part of the PNW are you in ?

Welcome from Nor-cal.

I love me the Pacific Northwest. I'm working up my credentials in hopes of transferring into my retirement position in southern Oregon. Too bad thats still 10-15yrs away.

Welcome. Use to live in Port Orchard and 6 yrs ago retired to NE Wisconsin. Best of wishes in your upcoming 2nd retirement.

I'd only smoked once or twice using an
el-cheep-o Brinkman. Then I pulled the trigger on my RecTec. One of my best purchases. No baby sitting. No ambient temperature issues. Spot on temperature control. I also picked up a AMNPS to handle cold smoking. Now I'm addicted.
Welcome and enjoy!

Well done sir!

Wow, thanks everyone for the welcome. I've been using the grill everyday and have gotten over the quirks of this grill pretty successfully. I grilled up some amazing chicken and a leg of lamb so far. I ruined a pork loin by not heeding the instructions (that whole thing about old dogs and new tricks). I'm in Shelton WA BTW. I have a a-maze-n smoker accessory on the way that should solve my smoke problem and provide a means of cold smoking. I also fixed a tiny issue of the lid not quite being contoured the same as the barrel and now it stays on temp (plus or minus 25ish degrees).
