Green Mountain Grill WiFi

I am trying to figure out a way to use my Green Mountain Grill Android app at work, to monitor my grill at home. I would love to put in a nice piece of meat to smoke all day while at work, but I want to be able to "check in" on it while at work.

Currently, you have to be connected to your home network in order to connect to your grill using the app.

I was thinking of maybe setting up a home VPN that I log into in order to get my app to connect to my grill and monitor it.

Any thoughts? Has anyone done that or better?

I haven't heard of anyone being able to do it.  I have a Tappecue and can monitor from anywhere.  Go to the GMG section on Pelletheads and ask.  I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be, but it is worth a shot.

My guess is that this will be included in an forthcoming update.  It seems as though everything is there other than the ability for the end-user to specify an address that they can access the same connection remotely.  I do this regularly for security cameras and other LAN devices so for me all I need is an advanced setting in the app to change the local IP address to a remotely accessible IP w/password and proper port forwarding options.  Easy peasy.  Just need GMG to remove the training wheels for those of us who are familiar with this sort of thing.  I get the nightmare of customer service issues they could potentially open up for themselves by doing so but that's the next evolution in this product advancement and for people like yourself and me it can't happen soon enough.  That's one of the primary reasons I got a GMG WiFi was to be able to control it remotely like I do most of my electronics in my home thanks to smart home controllers and remote access.

If you VPN into your network with your phone the app should work fine.

Or if you can tell the app an IP to use then you can use Port fwd on the router to achieve this.

Therein lies the problem that I mentioned because there doesn't yet exist an option for the end user to specify an IP address/port manually.

Ostrichsak is correct...you can join the grill to your home network, but that is really the extent of it (as far as the grill or app is concerned).

That is why I was thinking if I can connect to my home network through a VPN I set up, I *should* be able to connect to my grill and have access to running it through the app. I am having issues setting up the VPN right now, but am trying to figure that part out.
