My wife was able to secure me a PB440D for a whopping $35. She is a manager at a big box hardware store and they were clearancing them out.
I got it all put together and did a test run on a pork picnic, the wife said it was the best one I ever did! I have only ever used electric before then. One thing I did different was cook the first half at 250* and the second half of the cook time at around 275* do to being short on time. I was able to get a 7lb picnic up to 203* in about 8 hours. I didn’t wrapped it like I normally do but it turned excellent with a great bark.
I only ran into on hiccup when it ran out of pellets during the cook. When I added more pellets it filled the entire cup up but never lit. I had to pull it apart and empty the cup then it started fine.
I needed pellets and found that Lowe’s has just lowered their Pitt Boss Competition Pellets to $14.95 for the 40# bag. This is cheaper than anywhere else I saw and it looks like it’s going to be a new regular price.
All in all I am happy with the purchase and think pellets might be a good compromise between electric and an offset. Now I need her to find a bigger one on clearance.
