Friday morning when I had just started loading my log haul trailer I had what I figured to be a heart attack. Now as I was already out in the bush in the logging block, I had to decide whether to drive back 2 hours to the nearest hospital or finish loading and go to the hospital in Whitecourt (where I unload)--same distance. I figured since it was the same length of time, I might as well get paid for the drive. So...I loaded and delivered my logs. Once in Whitecourt, it seemed like the attack was over, so i headed for home--about 1 1/2 hours away.

Saturday morning bright and early Miss Linda drove me into the Drayton Valley hospital. Yep. Heart attack. They sent me by ambulance to Edmonton. If you've never been in an ambulance then let me tell you they ride like a stoneboat.

They cleared out an artery that was 100% plugged and I feel good as new.

But...there's always a but..in Alberta there's an immediate mandatory 3 month
Driving suspension for all commercial drivers. That meant that even if I wasn't looking up at turnip roots I was going to miss out on the entire Winter Log Haul. The log haul accounts for about 40% of my anual income. It makes for a real long streatch with no paycheck until the asphalt haul to the pavers starts up in June. Lots of stress rhere!!!!

Then this morning I was talking to the cardiologist about it and he told me "no problem". He said with the minimal damage to my heart he could circumvent the 3 month suspension. So I have to rest up for 2 weeks and then I can go back to work.

Thank you Lord. I just wasn't sure where the money was going to come from to make the payments on my Freightliner, log trailer, and brand new gravel trailer. Not to mention insurance on all of them, a mortgage payment, and little things like food.

We all take our continued good health for granted until something like this happens, then its a real wakeup call. Good thing I have a first class Guardian Angel!!!

Gary, thanks for sharing this...and glad you're alright considering the circumstances. Your description of the immediate crisis you could have been faced with is something many do not even think about. Debts can really bite you in a bad way when there's a loss of income, even if temporary. At least you'll only be out for 2 weeks...puts a little crunch on the finances, but hopefully you have enough set aside to make due. If I were closer I could offer some help with taking care of things while you're in slow-mode, but we're about a full day's drive away.

Good luck on the recovery, and take it easy when you get back out to work again.

Gary glad to hear it wasn't worse.

A few weeks off so you can run the smoker everyday! Just don't tell your cardiologist!

Glad to hear all is well. Heart attacks don't usually let you drive 2 hours to the nearest hospital. I am 45 minutes out and nervous that I may not make the trip if something goes wrong...JJ

Next time go to get checked to be safe! Hope all goes well and you get back to it!

Thanks Eric. Yeah a little crunch isn't bad. We'd have survived one way or another--always have so far--but this is much better.

Yeah thats always a concern. About the only negative I can think for not living in the big city.

Hey Gary...sorry to hear of your heart attack, but very glad to hear you're doing OK! And also good that this won't cut off your income.

Be well Brother...

Hey Gary, I'm glad you're OK.

I hope it will be another sixty eight years before the next one.

May the Good Lord bless you and your family.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Gary good news that your heart attack didn't do a lot of serious damage. It's also good news you will only be out of work for a few weeks.
The Lord has blessed you! Hope you have a speedy recovery!!

Thanks Ed. Yeah I'm hoping I'm long before the next one. Pretty boring sitting around in a hospital room. Glad I'm out of here tomorrow morning.

Gary, I'm so glad that your experience was not any worse than it was. Please keep a watch on everything and take it easy. Your health, your healing and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

God bless you and God be with you, Joe.

Wow glad your ok and recovering.

I can't imagine what that felt like, driving yourself while having a heart attack.

Wow that is scary. Most important is that you are ok and healthy now. Its a blessing that the doc can get you working in 2 weeks.

Stay safe.
