I finally scored a slicer after about a year of ups and downs with Craigslist. I picked up a Berkel 808 for 200 bucks

It has the anodized aluminum base and it needs a good polish. I used a mix of baking soda but I think i need something more heavy duty because this didnt do the trick. Does anyone have any recomendations as to what kind of polish I could use?

If the base is truly anodized, you will not be able to polish it.  Anodize is an extremely hard layer on the surface of the aluminum.  If it is not anodized, I would rub it down with a red Scotchbrite pad until you get a uniform finish and then do a final polish with Mothers aluminum polish.  You can even use WD-40 as a lube while using the Scotchbrite pad for an even smoother finish.  I believe the Scotchbrite and polish can be obtained from any auto parts store.  To see if it is anodized, i would check a small, inconspicuous area of the slicer and rub it with the Scotchbrite.  If it doesn't change appearance significantly, it is probably anodized.  If it isn't anodized, it will quickly produce a dark gray dust and the aluminum will become instantly shiny.

I have polished a few parts in my day and this method always worked for me.
