We used to get tons of smelt here years ago. We would fry up hundreds in a day or 2 . Nobody I know ever smoked smelt though. Can't say I ever heard of it being done.

The smelt runs here have declined greatly over the past 30 years.
Partly due to birds that eat them and game fish predators eating them up.
Not many people go get them anymore here in lower Michigan.
