Good deal or not?

  1. I was at Sam's club today and seen this MES 40 on sale for 299.  I don't have any idea if this is a bargain or not.

I strongly suggest reading others threads/posts on here regarding the new generation MES smokers. They seem to be catching fire, shocking people, tripping breakers etc. among other issues. Me? personally I'd never spend $$ on one until they do a complete make-over...but that's me. Many here have them and they seem to be, maybe a crap shoot.

Sams club has carried the MES 40 model for a number of years and at $299 that is the cheapest price you will find for that smoker.

Well said Chef.  With all the negativity on performance, as well as safety issues, I am surprised folks still show interest in the MB units and actually purchase them. There are alternatives.
  5. Thanks for the replies.

Is this the newest model or an older one?

Hard to tell from the box pic. The 'new' ones have the control panel near the back of the unit and exhaust vent on the side. Older ones have the panel in front & exhaust in back right corner. I would not spend 300 on any MES...ever.
  7. It must be an older one then. The controls are right in front on top. I was just looking at them, not in the market for a another

If the controls are in front on the top panel and the exhaust is in the side of the unit then it is the new model.

The older models seem to have been very reliable and cost effective smokers according to many posters.

Sorry to contradict what Willie said, but that's the new generation...he has it backwards...the older gen models have the control console near the back, on top of the cabinet.  On the new gen model, the control console is right in the front.  Willie is correct, however, that another way to tell the difference is the exhaust vent...on the the older ones its on the top right; on the new gen models, its on the left side of the cabinet, near the top.

I would beg to differ,,,I have a 30 and a 40 and never had any problems in 4 years. The 30 cooks more even but the 40 has the volume I desire.  Just my 2 cents..
  14. I bought the MES Smoker and havent had any trouble yet. It is the lower end electric on with the solid black door. I didnt get glass door model cause I figured it would turn smoky black anyway. Having said all this I have only used mine 5 times. I hope it holds up. I am a beginner!
  15. I'm going to keep looking around at different smokers. I want to get one larger then I have now.

I have the old mes40 and love it.
  17. I got the Bass Pro model which is still the old generation, Its not on the Web site, but is available at the store. Im very impressed by the quality considering it was only $200.00 bucks. Im building a cart with wheels for it this weekend, but other than that, it all I needed for my sausage cooking at 165*.

Todd Johnson gave it a less than stellar review. I own the 1st generation MES 30", which I bought because I couldn't afford the 40" but I love it just the same. Have had it a year with absolutely no problems. Bought it off Amazon. I boycott SC and Walmart so I was glad to get the unit online.

I just bought my second Old Gen MES 40 model # 20070311 all Stainless Steel, from Academy Sports $365 delivered. You can find it with a search of Grills and Smokers. They both work flawlessly. Any of the older models are good performers. The new models have some flaws, but some guys have worked out the bugs and like them. There are other electric smokers but none come close to the MES in size and price...JJ

Darn right, CJJ. I have the MES 30 model #20070910 with the black powder coating. I bought it for $189.00 in between the weeks it was on sale for $179.00. But even at that price it was a bargain for the quality smoke jobs it puts out. This makes me one happy and lucky guy because I couldn't afford more expensive smokers. I just wish my budget had allowed me to purchase the 40-inch model, just for the extra width, which comes in handy for large briskets and racks of ribs. But, I make do with what I have and it's sure a lot of fun to use.
