Yes it was a great time but we had to work harder at the fishing than 2012. The experts blame the wet season not being as big as past years.Wet season will start soon.
Its very tide dependent fishing. The tides there are huge & go back over the low lying mangrove forests for a long way then drain back into the river system .Its essentially a big delta. Its a matter of finding the barra & others as they chase the bait that collects at drain & creek mouths.
Its exciting because you are twitching lures in snaggy locations or sight casting to fish. They will take flies.
Its 30 pound braid 30 to 50 pound leader, heavy duty ,snaps, rings & hooks. Barra jump.tail walk, head shake head for the snags. They hit lures hard.
Best barra for us went 91cm. The red fish is a golden snapper we went offshore 1 day & caught 20 in 30 minutes including 4 or so over 70cm.
American tackle very popular,Loomis,St Croix in rods .Every tackle box has at least a few Bomber brand lures. There is a special Aussie version with beefed up frame ,rings & hooks.Probably the most popular lure ever made for barra . Lot of Aussie brands as well,I find it hard to walk past the big displays in the fishing stores.
Our guides season made harder by head on collision with water buffalo a few months back, 4X4 written off, boat trailer & boat damaged, buffalo deceased.
I made fish curry a few nights ,chilli mud crab as well. We were pretty weary by the time we headed out its tough conditions if you aren't used to it but the booze didnt help.
I will try to get a few location shots up later.
