So I'm a nerd and I knew there was a special keystroke for this and I finally broke down and asked the Google what it was.

For those of you who are OCD about using the correct symbols, like myself:

On your keyboard:
Hold down either Alt key and press 0176 on your number pad (not the top row of numbers) and then release your Alt key, voila there it is °.

I'm not sure if this works on Macs or not.

Great tip!

rbranstner make sure you continue to hold the ALT key down and press 0 1 7 6 and then release the ALT key after pressing 6. And don't try to hold down the 0176.

You have to use the number pad also. I'll update the original post with that.

If you have a laptop, your mileage may vary.

Be sure to use the number pad on the right side of the keyboard or if you're on a laptop, it only works if you use the "wanna be" number pad.. the one that requires you to hit a function key.

It will not work with the numbers that run across the top of the qwerty keyboard.

° It worked for me, but the asterisk works too and is more convenient. I think everyone here knows 225* means 225 degrees. Itis nice to be able to actually write 225° though. Thanks for the tip!

Your laptop should have the number pad embedded in it's keyboard (not off to the side like a desktop keyboard)

I believe you have to either hit a function key or maybe turn on num locks to get it to happen.

I don't have my laptop with me or I'd try it for sure.

Sorry dude.

I hold down the ALT key, and then using the numeric keypad I press 248. as in °. It's all good my friend

Now thats funny cause on my computer it's hold the alt key and then hit 2 4 8 on the note pad. ° But it works both ways for me °

I'm gonna show my age now...

Way back when... hidden ASCII characters.... alt + (0 - 255) Made for some creative passwords... Anyone know the Hidden Dragon?

Hint: The answer is here.

for a MAC its just the alt and 0 and you get º

I use a variety of them in my posts:

Hold down Alt and 4 digits:

° 0176
§ 0167 (2 of 'em in my signature)
¼ 0188
½ 0189
¾ 0190

Hold down Alt and 2 digits:

♀ 12
