I've just purchased a Char-Griller 3001 & it has yet to arrive. Couple of questions... Can I add lava coals to this? I like to be able to see my flames and I'm a little off put by the baffles... Will adding a couple of smoke boxes under the grate have much effect on the flavour of the meat when grilling?

I plan to add a side box smoker to it, but having difficulty finding one locally... with the weight it could be very expensive to have delivered!

Bluefoam,

please try to keep the comments appropriate. You catch more bees with honey than vinegar. Sorry I do not have the answer to your question. Give it a shot and see how it works.

SoOfaSmoker, I was just testing the water to see if people would react... My questions have been up for a few days without a response, but as soon as I post something controversial I get a response... It didn't take long.

My question remains however...

I'm not familiar with your grill, but I would think that if the grill was designed for lava rocks then they would have come with it.

Why not give the manufacturer a call & see what they say. Maybe they can give you some ideas on using lava rocks with their grill.

If you want to add smoke flavor to your meat I would use an AMAZEN tube smoker right on the grate.

Thanks SmokinAl, I'll look into the pellet tube, looks interesting. You have a point regarding the coals... I'll use it for a while before looking at changes. Appreciate the feedback.
