I'd like to know if anyone has an opinion on mixing fuel types? (Lump, briquettes, chips, pellets?)

I think most of us do. I mix wood chunks and and charcoal in both my grill and cabinet cookers. Lump and briquettes in the grill and briquettes only in the cabinet. Adds to the flavor.

I sometimes mix briquettes and chunks or briquettes and pellets. Depends on what I am smoking and what kind of smoke profile I want for the end result.

I burn 100% lump in my Big Green Eggs. I sometimes add some alternating layers of Kingsford "Long Burning" briquettes to my Drums, I have over sized baskets so I can get 14 hours + with no problem. With either combination of briquettes or lump I add chunks deep, and sprinkle pellets around. Then repeat layers of charcoal and pellets adding a chunk or two to my last layer. I light a barbecue fire in one center spot. This way, as the lump coal gradually grows during the length of my cook, the fire finds new pellets. I get a very gentle smoke throughout the entire day.

I'm basically a briquette user. However I wouldn't hesitate to add in lump if I was cooking with a higher heat. The only time I use pellets is for cold smoking same with dust. For wood I use chunks since I'm a charcoal smoker. Chips would burn to quickly.

I like to keep a bag of lump around for a quick heat boost in my kettles . I use chunks , chips and pellets in with the charcoal .

I use lump to start a coal bed in my stick burner. Sometimes I’ll use briquettes if that’s what I have. I use splits mostly but will throw chunks in the fire from time to time

Back when I'd use lump on occasion, I'd first lay down a level of briquettes in both my WSM and the chimney before adding the lump. It kept the smaller pieces of lump from falling thru the grate or the bottom of the chimney.

Quit buying lump. Quality was poor and I get better consistency with briquette.
Got rid of the offset, but I used a mix of stick, chunk, and briquette in the firebox.
In the kettle, I use briquette and sometimes add chips or chunks. I often use a tube filled with pellets.
In the pellet pooper, I use a tube filled with pellets.

In my WSM I use a combo of briquettes & wood chunks. In my offset I start a coal bed with briquettes & then add wood splits from then on. I think most of the guys do it this way.
