Fire pit/ smoker combo?

Wife wants a fire pit and I’m thinking bout connecting it to another chamber so it can double as an offset smoker. Sort of like this picture linked but with a horizontal chamber rather than vertical. Toss in some sort of firebox cover and some sort of air flow control on the side of the pit and I think this should work. Has anyone ever made a type of fire pit / smoker like this before?
