I am in the process of building a reverse flow and had a question about the spacing between the fire grate bars, I plan on using 1 1/4 x 1/4 angle iron with the point up.  I was wondering how much space to leave between them at the low spot.

The grate in my stick burner is made out of a piece of industrial decking.  The horizontal bars are an inch apart, which is too big if you are going to use anything except sticks.  I just threw a piece of expanded metal over mine and it works great.  Awesome air flow.

5/8" rebar, 5/8" spacing here as well.
