Was thinking about one of my favorite movies today and it got me curious as to what some of your favorite military/war films are.
Can include old, current or even futuristic (Starship Troopers type counts).

I love Apocalypes Now, great film but my two favorites are Full Metal Jacket (just an all around great film) and Hamburger Hill.

How about you?

-Apocolypse Now
-Deer Hunter
-Full Metal Jacket
-Red Dawn
-Stripes

Saving private Ryan. Apocalypse now. Deer hunter. Full metal jacket. Schindler's list. 30 seconds over Tokyo. The big red 1.

Ah! I forgot all about Stripes, good one

I'm in agreement with all on Apocolypse Now - one of the best movies period, not just war/military film.

I also like Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Rambo - First Blood Part II (I know it's cheesy, but I freaking love it, OK?

and the first First Blood is very rewatchable too) and Letters From Iwo Jima.

Also love, although they're comedies they're also war/military films, Dr. Strangelove (easily one of my all-time favorite movies) and Top Secret.

I like all the above plus:
Sands of Iwo Jima
What Price Glory-Jimmy Cagney & Dan Daly (WW I France)
They were expendable
In Harms Way
The Horse Soldiers (Civil War)
Battle of the Bulge
Bridges at Toko Ri
Bridge over the river Kwai
Gettysburg
Also Winds of War, & War & Rememberance mini-series

Excellent thread! Here are my favourites in no particular order....

BOMBER COMMAND
Jimmy Stewart, June Allyson (wasn't she in the '60's series Lost In Space?)

A Cardinals pitcher is recalled to SAC during the cold war. Great movie featuring the rare B-47 StratoJet. Beautiful huge bomber with a bubble canopy.

The Cross Of Iron
James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, Directed by Sam Peckinpah.

WW2 German Officer wants the Iron Cross (Knight's Cross) medal and won't stop to get it. Eastern Front horror.
Who can forget the gut-wrenching scene towards the end (typical of Samp Peckinpah movies) "Demarcation.....Demarcation!!!!"

The Blue Max
George Peppard, Ursulla Andress, Jeremy King (played Capt Jean Luc Picards vineyard owning brother in a TV installment of Star Trek, The Next Generation. Great episode!)

WW1. An Infantryman-turned-pilot wants the Blue Max (Pour Le Merite) medal. Beautiful flying scenes (a lot of them) with some awesome planes including the Fokker Triplane. The Red Baron makes an appearance early on the movie.

Twelve O'Clock High
Gregory Peck

WW2. An American commander learns leadership the hard way. Great movie that includes much actual footage of air combat. Awesome two hours with much detail on the beautiful B-17 Flying Fortress, inside and out.

Green Berets
John Wayne, David Janssen, George Takei (played Sulu in the original Star Trek series)

Vietnam ...you know the deal. It's a great John Wayne movie.

Murphy's War
Peter O'Toole

WW2. A remake of Moby D*** along the lines of Apocalypse know being a remake of Heart Of Darkness. Excellent movie. Saw it as a kid and still sticks in my head.

Kelly's Heroes
Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Don Sutherland, Gavin McLeod (Capt. of The Love Boat TV series in the '70's)

WW2. One of the best movies of WW2 and has a modern perspective (cynical, yet really funny). An infantryman has a tip on a hoard of German gold, and he wants to get it. Along the way he ends up having to recruit hundreds to help him out! Who can forget the classic scene in the italian village square (during the fight) where LT. Clint Eastwood spies his Tank's support leader on a lawn chair....

(Clint Eastwood) "Oddball...whattya doin'!?"

(Don Sutherland) "Relax Lieutenant, just grabbin' a little rays, eating' a little cheese". Outstanding movie, highly recommended!

Lots of good ones already mentioned.. I would like to add Midway.. Saw that as a teenager and it was the first movie ( that i saw anyways) to be in sensurround at the theatre...Ahh the 70's

84 Charlie Mopic ..The quintessential Viet Nam movie told entirely through the lens of the combat cameraman.

Band of Brothers...An absolutely astounding cinematic event.

The Green Berets..Ok...I'm prejudiced ...I was one.
De Oppresso Liber ..Delta Co..20th SFGA

Lawrence of Arabia....no need to explain that one

Run Silent, Run Deep...an all-time classic

I can't believe I forgot about this...!

Inglourious Basterds! The new Tarantino/Nazi movie, boy oh boy does Hitler get it...
I'm going to watch it again right now
