I was told stainless steel cable ties were the best way to fasten my WSM's charcoal grate to the "charcoal chamber," which is the tall ring with holes in it. The cable ties popped during the first cook, so I guess not a great, or grate, idea. What are other people using? I guess I can use plain old steel wire.

I used bailing wire.

I used 10/24 eye hooks . Just cut off the end of the threads after you bolt it down .

Any wire is going to burn through at some point . Especially as much as you're using yours .
I mentioned the eyelets above . That will be a better option than wire , at least last a longer , if not forever .
Get a setup like this . 3 Locations is fine on my 14 . You might do 4 on the 22 .

Loop end goes on the charcoal ring .

Threaded ( machine threads ) shaft goes thru the grate .
Then washer and nut . I cut off the excess length , but you could leave it .
Kind of hard to see , but thats looking up from the bottom . Nut and washer .

Then you can lift the whole assembly out , leaving the leftover charcoal .
Shake the ash into the bottom bowl , and dump it .
