I can understand the itch, Bill! I am genuinely jealous of your extended season and of course, the long two wheelin' season! At this moment I am waiting for a call to go to work. The ice storm cometh! Sort of puts a damper on my enthusiasm. Have received veggie seeds from Henry Fields and have an order for herb seeds placed with Artistic Gardens/Le Jardin Gourmet. Should be in first of next week! Will post their URL in the proper spot when it is created. Great supplier! Nuff rambli'.......need more cofee!

Ok.. great news! I am actually working on the Home Gardening forum as far as organizing it on paper before I actually do it in the forum and I have a question that I want 100% feedback on:

I have already created a website dealing with home gardening which will cover all of the aspects of home gardening that we have been discussing as well as other aspects such as flower, trees, shrubs, raised bed gardening, making your own mulch, etc.

www.ExtremeHomeGardening.com

I am also planning to have a forum right on the site similar to the one we have here at smoking meat forums. It will be addressed like www.ExtremeHomeGardening.com/forum which is not created yet

The question..

Is it important to combine the smoking meat forum with the home gardening forum or would you guys just want to use the forum I am getting ready to set up on the home gardening site?

I will have the forum up and running by Saturday morning and if you would rather wait and see what it looks like first then that is fine but I would like some feedback.

I am more than happy to combine the gardening with the smoking meat as we had planned but I also though it might be nice to use the other site as a"sister" site to smoking meat forums and we could have links to it so it would be easily accessible.

It would be easier from an admin point of view to have a separate forum and we could use the same type format with the "roll call" super welcoming thread at the top, etc.

Let me know what you think...

Thanks!!!

yo big boss jeff,

the sister site is way cool with me.
the people attracted to a garden ing site [who may not be SMOKERS]
would expand the knowledge base.

this is off topic---i dont see earl-d or dutch as most of us know him,
on the forum staff listing.

isnt he the Official welcome dude???

i luv this place

Earl-D is the official welcome dude and I just have not taken the time to do it officially within the coding of the board.. he does a wonderful job but I think they are making him work more hours lately at his place of employment.

Jeff,

I see no problem with creating the new forum as part of a "sister" site, as long as the two are closely linked to allow simple transition between the two. I can certainly understand that admin would be easier. Also, I think that it would broaden our exposure in general and attract more people to either hobby.

However you decide to go about it is fine with me...I will continue to support both venues whole heartedly and am willing to help any way I can.

Cheers,
Brian

Hi Jeff,
You're the expert but just thinking about the alternatives, it sounds to me as if the sister site approach would be more advantageous. When I think of home gardening, I can imagine a site at least as big as the smoking forum and potentially much larger. So, I'd vote for the seperate sites but as Brian says, I'd be pleased to support both sites and will help in any way I can.

Jeff. I agree that from an admin point of view a separate site would be best. Let's go for it! The totally informative approach and most importantly well managed and friendly atmosphere of this site, combined with your Smoking Meats Website, is the reason I siggested the gardening part. I like your style, attitude and approach to these sites. In retrospect, I realize that gardening deserves a totally separate venue which can be closely linked to the smoking site. I will be happy to help all I can to continue with a separate gardening site modeled after your Smoking Meats Website and Forum.
The two can be closely related and draw from each other and open up all sorts of profitable "clicks" for you as well!

Actually, I have been kind of busy, working my full time job and my part time job and been shopping for a house. As for the house, we are closing on the 9th of Jan. and as soon as the basketball season is over with I'll be back to 8-10 hours a week instead of 15-20 hours.

Congratulations on your house, Dutch! Please tell us about it! I know you made a few mumbles about a smokehouse and so on. Got room for a garden? Fill us in!

(Nuthin' like havin' yer own place!)

Garden spot at the new homestead as used by the current owners is 4 ft wide and 20 feet long. I'm limited by length as it begins where the RV parking ends and runs to the fence line. There is also 2 cherry trees, an apple tree and a peach tree. Several Concord grape vines call the back fence "home".

Still waiting for my Henry Field's Seed catalogue. I may have to order my seed on line from them.

Well guys and gals.. the Home Gardening forum at www.extremehomegardening.com/forum/ is up and running as far as functionality goes. I started putting together some of the categories and forums but my eyes are starting to see things that are not really there and that is my signal that I have stayed up way past my bedtime.

It is now 4:38 AM in the morning and I at least have enough done so that you can see what the new forum over there will look like.

I have had all positive response so far on having a separate forum for the gardening thing but if anyone knows of a reason why it would still be better to have it here then please speak up or else I don't want no complaining later.

I could use some feedback on what I have done so far.. breaking veggies up into:
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Squash and Pumpkins
  • Onions, Garlic, Shallots and Leeks
  • Potatoes
  • Beans and Peas
  • Etc.
I broke Herbs up into two basic categories.. growing and using

I still have a ways to go on it but any and all feedback, suggestion, and even constructive criticism is appreciated. I don't want none of this vague "it sucks" stuff. If you think it truly sucks then tell me what sucks and what you would do to fix it.

Probably best not to post too much in it just yet since stuff is still moving aroung a bit but it should at least give you an idea of how I am thinking.

Feel free to go ahead and register as a member if you like.

Anyway.. goodnight all and I expect to have lots of feedback on this when I get up from my hibernation tomorrow afternoon..

Just kidding.. I doubt very seriously if my three kids would let me sleep that long even if I wanted to.

signing off...

Lookin' good, Jeff! Judging from its size and potential I think the decision to split it off from this forum was a good one! I think that the next segment you install should be a general one for tools, Tips 'n Tricks, seed starting, etc. Then, of course thre will probably be a call for flowers, trees and shrubs. This one is gonna keep you busy for a long time but I think it will pan out very well given your attitude and dedication to this effort!
Thanks!
Monty

PS I have some "tweaker" ideas I will save till the bulk of the design is finished

Jeff, thanks for all your hard work.Gardening can be a very deep subject, pardon the pun,and needs a forum of the quality that you produce.Ill be checking it out today, again my thanks.

Everyone.. I think I have the forum ready to start using. I need everyone to check it out, go ahead and register and start posting and let's get the ball rolling.

If you see a section we need to add then let me know. If you find a bug or something that is not working right let me know that as well.

See you over there soon.

Only thing missing now is a link to the garden website and forum! Good show, Jeff!
Monty

The gardening forum is up and running and thanks to everyone who helped me correct a few bugs yesterday.. kudos!

It seems to be working very nicely and all we need now is for all of you who have an interest in gardening as well as smoking to go on over and take it for a test drive.

I think the two forums will work very nicely together.

If you have any problems or questions just let me know.

**Cat steps in cautiously...**

I don't want to step on anybody's toes. But may I suggest that, instead of possibly overextending yourselves with canning added, too, that you might include a link to *my* home site.

Canning isn't difficult, but it's one of those things that must be done correctly, or it could be deadly.

Mrs. S is constantly monitored and has lots of experienced, encouraging canners there (myself included). It rarely goes more than an hour or two before somebody comes in to help, and we've been known to pass on our phone numbers privately to the really nervous new canners.

Feel free to check it out if you like... http://www.mrssurvival.com/ubbthread...&Board=Harvest

I'm not *here* to drum up increased traffic for there, but it is a nice, clean place with good info. I've been there for years, so feel free to ask me anything.

Cat

I would like to see a section of growning herbs since we use them so much in our rubs, marinades, and mops. It would also be nice to have a section on canning as Dutch mentioned which could include pickles, peppers, vegetables etc..
