So I see HD has twin 20lb packs of embers charcoal for 10 bucks...
Kingsford for 15...
Anyone used embers...
Did a quick online search for reviews...
Here are a few of the complaints...
~ Burns faster than kingsford (vent control?)
~ More ash or "lots of ash" to be more specific but didnt state what they were comparing to...
~ Chemical smell...the contention here was there was a chemical aditave to make them burn...the same review also said the "smell" transferred an "off taste" to the food...
One review said "havent seen them in years but they were horrible"
Now most reviews were positive but there were these few issues.
Does anyone have any real life experience with embers brand (I run an 18" and 22" WSM...) that could give me an honest review?
Thanks folks
Walt
New to the forum, literally just signed up after searching for online reviews of the Embers brand charcoal and came across this string. I am using it as I write this, and I can confirm, these burn way faster than several other brands I've tried and have already produced twice the ash. NOT slow burning at all - they're really small briquets and are more suited to grilling but not for smoking IMO.

Live in CLT. I have a weakness for anything smoked and have been casually doing my own for a few yrs now on/off as I have the time. I grew up with simple bullet smokers (the old Brinkmanns) where I watched my dad repeatedly churn out amazing goodies with no meat thermometers, injections, sprays; just good old experience and intuition. That is my style as well, starting off with cheap, simple smokers and experimenting with different charcoals/woods/water - no water. I know the day will soon come where I'm gonna upgrade to a much easier and precise smoker where you can set it and forget it....but not yet.
