Man that Sucks. Hope you get healed up right and can find a less hazardous hobby.

Things like this almost make me glad I'm already infirm to not do some activities even if I wanted to.

Hopefully you can find a way to keep on with the smoking while you heal.
thank you! I wish I could grill and smoke while in this state, but its not gonna be an option for a while. At least I stocked the freezer with smoked products in the fall. so we will be eatin good or a while

Hmmm you get into the sous vide much? Different approach but could be fun to play with if you can't get outside. Not sure it's an option but hey we all need something right?

right! I cant stand tho. I can use crutches from bed to couch, couch to bathroom and back and that is all. sitting and being vertical is excruciatingly painful. I appreciate the ideas and all.

Well damn. Trying to think of ways to keep with it but not stand much.

I appreciate it! but I have accepted my fate. I had the exact same injury about 35 years ago. IT was 100% the worst thing I ever went through. if they have better technology it could be better, but better than that could still be pretty bad. I will update post-op for sure. Tuesday I will know the plan at least.

A good friend is an ortho surgeon. She was telling me about the advances in joint replacement by means of 3d printing of guides to make cuts for proper fit of the replacement parts.
Hopefully that also applies to correctly use plates to rebuild your leg/ankle.

Neighbor friend got an electric scooter so he is out and about in the area. Central Florida is relatively flat. I recall you are not on a level area outside of the house.

I hear ya with the bad breaks hurting so damned much, been there and done that.

I hope surgery, recovery and rehab all goes well.
Meanwhile don't be afraid to use those Rx narcotic painkillers.

Mine took four months to go back to work and skydiving, a full year before I felt somewhat normal again.

Still trying to figure out why they are making you wait till Tuesday to see the Dr mine was the day after after the scheduled surgeries were done. I was 200 miles from home when it happened went from one ER to the one near home via private vehicle. I would suggest not taking any chances of losing balance and putting any weight on it. That gives a whole new meaning to the word pain ask me how I know not the very worst pain I've ever had but probably a close second.
Did they align it and splint it good till you see the Dr. Anybody checking pulses in your foot?

I was thinking the same thing, but...
I broke mine in Davis CA, outside of Sacremento, went to the ER was stabilized, put in a cast, and then on to a flight home in Mobile, AL with a transfer in Atlanta.
Surgery in Mobile less than 24 hours after the accident.

I am splinted up, foot pulse checked and all that. Not sure On the rest, couldnt really get many answers. The surgeons group I am seeing did say, if they feel surgery is priority they will cancel others to put me first. we'll see.

ok there is more to this. I went to the ER at Copper mtn ski resort. its not in network and a stand alone ER. they referred to their ortho people closer to where we live-they are not in network so that appointment was canceled. it was for the day after. I talked to my insurance to see who was in network which is almost useless because their records are ridiculously out of date, so i called a few and they had moved to out of network providers. the ones in network were also scheduling for Tuesday. Even after I explained the diagnosis.

After all that I had started to think more clearly and decided to call another ortho group I had used before for a different issue. So I called them and got the appointment on Tuesday with one of the highest rated ankle/other surgeons in the area. So I chose to go with him and wait.

30 years ago when I had the same break, it was repaired by a surgeon I never met till the follow up to remove the stiches and that always rubbed me wrong. and my right ankle has been deformed ever since. I ran for a number of years before fallout from that surgery made me stop. So being able to pick my guy for the surgery gives me hope that at least I have chance at a better outcome this time.

that is the long version of how I ended up on the slow boat. Not sure given how it all played out, if I coulda made it faster and better? will never know now. Ive waited longer that is truth.

Well crap David. Really hoping Tuesday discussion goes well with the surgeon and he's up on the latest techniques. It's tough to come with grips on the years that have past, especially for the very active. Got my fingers crossed and prayers said. There will be time to reflect during the healing. You'll come out of it on top. Stay positive bud!

Matt, thank you brother. This guys seems to be “the ankle guy”. Hoping he is all that and more. Greatly appreciate the kind words. I’ll be keeping y’all in the loop for sure. It’s been a bit bumpy but staying positive and looking forwards!

When you got home a trip to the hospital ER you want to go to more than likely would have you admitted and surgery the next day. The ER in N. FL actually talked to the ER at my local hospital otherwise I would have had to sign out AMA they said.

That is a total bummer. But 30 years has allowed for some advancements in surgery, hardward, and general rehabilitation. Having once been a real radiologic technologist (and a radiation therapist), I appreciate the pics of the radiographs. Looks like your fib has a spiral fx. Your tibia does not seem displaced very much.

I am sure the actual physicians told you something totally different, meaning, I am not smarter than I look.

Godspeed.

Dang, that’s a bummer. Prayers for a speedy recovery. My uncle just ripped his hamstring off his pelvis xcounty skiing, if I had to choose I think I’d take your injury over his.

thank you! I was assuming things had improved in 30 years.

They only said I had a bimalleolar fx. nothing about a spiral too. thats not good.

well that sound pretty awful too. I am a "it could always be worse" kinda guy. like I didnt break my neck, get a head injury etc. broken bones heal, some take longer than others, Ive broke many, they are still attached and functioning. Thank you for the well wishes!
