Actually Dutch, when you host a picture on photobucket or imageshack, etc. you're not using any bandwidth from the SMF server to load that picture. Because the file is stored on a different server the bandwidth to load that image comes from that server, not the SMF one. That's why I encourage people on my forums to use off site storage and linking for their images.
Now for images that ARE uploaded and stored on the SMF server, you're right the thumbnail approach does save a LOT of bandwidth.
Also, I'm talking about the bandwidth for the server, not the viewer. As people on a slow dialup connection will tell you, the thumbnail approach is also better because they don't have to wait as long for huge images to load.
