DaWeber is a rescue 1990 enjoying a second life with me. I've made seversl modifications to it, including cutting the OEM grate in half. One reason for this is shown here.
First, the grate can easily be cut by three snips with bolt cutters. A hacksaw would work. Then, you should enlarge the existing support tabs. For this, I cut up some soup can steel and made these tabs which I also had to secure with a nail as a pin.
My favorite way to start a fire is to take one split as I might use in the offset, and split it down to kindling, then light it with a propane torch. At this point most of the charcoal waits off to the side.
In this case, I was using an indirect method, and with only half of the grate it's easy to boss the fire around. Without direct heat, or much smoke, the meat roasts.
All done before the day gets hot.
